The experience didn’t come close to matching either the price or the five-star label. The worst part: at check-in there were hairs under the shower in our supposedly premium room. I didn’t even call reception — it felt too humiliating to have to point that out at a hotel of this supposed standard. Breakfast was the other big letdown. It’s served in the same bar as the lobby, and on a weekend you wait in line around 40 minutes. The food is the bare minimum — no fresh vegetables, no fresh eggs. I asked for poached eggs and was told the kitchen “doesn’t work” during breakfast. I asked for a cappuccino and was told the espresso machine doesn’t work, so only black coffee is available. The machine actually works - so this just being lazy. The quality was below two-star hotels I’ve stayed at in Europe. There’s no spa, and you don’t get access to the kind of amenities you’d expect at this level. The gym is a small room — but at least it exists. The issue is the system and the management’s choices. Staff is not well trailer or motivated. If this were a 3- or even 4-star hotel, I could accept a lot of this. But charging five-star prices and calling yourself five stars while delivering this is where it falls apart. A property at this level has to actually take care of its guests. We stayed in a “premium” room at $1,100/night and we felt like it was 3* experience

WARNING: Unprofessional Staff, No Management Support. Our experience at InterContinental Barclay was deeply DISAPPOINTING due to a complete LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM and basic customer service from the staff. Upon checking in, we waited in our room for our luggage to be delivered. It took over 40 MINUTES for our bags to arrive. An unacceptable delay that we have never experienced at any other hotel of this caliber. When we called the front desk halfway through our wait to inquire about the delay, we were simply told they would "check," but no follow-up or explanation was provided. When our luggage finally arrived, I opened my bag and discovered that a highly valuable item was missing. We immediately contacted our airline to report the issue. However, given the unexplained 40-minute window where our bags were unaccounted for in the hotel's possession, it was entirely reasonable and necessary to ask the hotel to investigate as well. We went to the concierge and calmly explained the situation. We maintained a polite and logical demeanor, simply stating that an item was missing and asking for their assistance in investigating the timeline. The concierge escorted us to the baggage desk, stated he would go speak with the manager, and left. He never returned. While waiting at the baggage desk, the situation escalated unacceptably. Two members of the bell staff became immediately defensive and began raising their voices, aggressively demanding to know why we were accusing them of theft. To be entirely clear, we never accused anyone of stealing. We merely reported a missing valuable and asked for help. One Hispanic bell staff member spoke to us in a shockingly rude and condescending tone, asking, “So what do you want? Huh?” The situation became even more chaotic when the two baggage staff members began loudly arguing and yelling at each other in front of us. No other staff members intervened to de-escalate the situation or offer us any assistance. Appalled by this behavior, we informed the baggage staff that we no longer wished to speak and requested the security manager. Eventually, a member of the security team arrived. Instead of helping us formally document or investigate the missing item, the security personnel immediately became defensive as well, repeatedly insisting that the baggage staff "would never do that." Again, we had not made any accusations; we were simply asking for a standard investigation. Ultimately, our primary grievance shifted from the missing item to the appalling way we were treated. Even if the hotel was completely unable to help locate the item, basic hospitality requires showing understanding and a willingness to assist a guest in distress. Instead, the staff's aggressive, emotional, and highly defensive reaction only escalated the situation and left us deeply angered. Given the appalling way we were treated by multiple departments, this was the WORST hotel experience we’ve have ever had.

Avoid this tourist trap! Location is good (but most manhattan hotels are). Other than that I would avoid. Staff took two swipes from one card and one from another a check in. Took $400 from one and $1000 from the other as a pre authorization. Denied any liability for the $1000 transaction when i approached the extremely unhelpful staff. Eventually had it returned after raising with visa disputes team. $45 per day amenity fee not mentioned when booking. This allows a $30 per day credit to spend in room or bar. As a taster a bottle of water is $10, a handful of candy is $10, and a soda can is $14. All plus tax, plus a $2.99 plus tax per day charge to refill the mini bar! Breakfast ok but restaurant cannot cope so lengthy lines every day with up to 45 minute wait. We opted to get a take out one day to avoid this. Waiter will ask you to sign a bill even though breakfast included. This is just to charge you a hefty tip…for a buffet breakfast! Rooms getting dated and zero sound proofing. Take some earplugs if you want some sleep. Poor attitude of reception staff was appalling and doesn’t meet with IHG core values.

**Disappointing service and unresolved billing issues** I booked the InterContinental New York Barclay through The Edit, and while the hotel itself was acceptable, it was definitely overpriced. Without the credits provided through The Edit, I would not consider it worth the cost. The location is excellent, only about a two-minute walk from Grand Central. The room was fine: clean and comfortable enough, but nothing particularly impressive or luxurious. The restaurant service, however, was awful. Despite (or Because of) the mandatory 18% gratuity, the service was minimal and slow. The staff did not seem welcoming, and basic items such as coffee and juice were not replenished. The most frustrating part was the billing. I should have received a $100 food and beverage credit, but it was not deducted from my bill. The parking charge also appeared as $260.43 after tax for two nights, even though the stated pre-tax rate was $90 per night, which makes the final amount unclear and not transparent. I called twice about these simple billing issues. Both times, I was told the matter would be escalated to the accounting department, but the issue was still not resolved. It is unbelievable that a reputable hotel such as InterContinental cannot promptly correct a straightforward billing problem. Instead of making another call and hearing the same response, I am leaving this review so other guests are aware. I will not return. *****Update***** The $100 credit was returned. No explanation of any kind (like the valet parking charge). Add back to 3 stars.

Would not recommend to stay at this hotel ever again. The rooms were decent, but the service is awful. The staff are horribly trained, with a "this is above me/this does not concern me" attitude. Despite being an IHG elite member, there was no separate line for check-in, and we waited 30 minutes to check in. At almost 500/night price point, you'd expect that they'd at least have two complimentary water bottles in the room upon check in. Instead, even after calling the front desk they said they do not provide water and pointed us to the water coolers in the gym. Our room had a lamp that was broken and could not be turned off. The staff told us they'd have it fixed the next morning, but never did, and we had to resort to screwing out the lightbulb every night just to have the light turned off. Breakfast was also a nightmare. There was a long line, and we waited 45 minutes (despite the waitress telling us it will take 15 minutes) without getting seated. It was clearly visible that there were multiple empty seats that just needed to be set up so that people could sit, but the staff were uncoordinated, and the waitress consistently repeated that she is only in charge of seating people and that what goes on behind is not her business. This is a hotel group. All staff members are representing IHG and should be working for the overall hotel brand. It is absolutely ridiculous that there is no coordination and help from each other, and that they'd rather have everyone wait hours than just help tell the staff that the tables just require cutlery for people to be seated. The waitress started giving out take out boxes so people could eat in their room while the empty tables remained unattended all the way till breakfast ended. Absolute nightmare. Editing this to also add that they charge a delivery charge for room service. Absolutely ridiculous. I’ve never heard of such a thing especially when the prices are already adjusted to be more expensive for room service. Considering how we had to bring up our own breakfast to our room in takeout boxes this just feels like a slap in the face.
