My experience with REI has even great. The bike shop has had an excellent standard of service, I got a great deal on my bike from them, and the shop manager has gone out of his way to save me money and keep my bike going. On top of the service everyone has always been positive and approachable. It’s rare for a retail operation of this size to have this type atmosphere as well as this type of service. Edit: I’m going to leave an edit each time the knock it out of the park. I don’t want to spend to too much space on the details but these guys are great.

I was looking for Hoka hiking shoes, goes for around $200. A young male associate came over and left after finding out they didn't have my size. I still looked around. Another associate came and suggested other options. I told her I have a lot of ankle issues. She let me try 6 different shoes in different sizes until I was satisfied. Her name was Maya or Mia. They should give her a raise.

REI is my go-to store for backpacking and hiking gear, and what keeps me coming back isn't just the selection—it's the people. The customer service is outstanding. I've consistently found the team to be generous with their time, knowledgeable, and, most importantly, willing to listen before making a recommendation. Many of them are experienced hikers and backpackers themselves, so their advice comes from real-world experience rather than simply reading a product description. Whether I've been looking for ways to lighten my pack and move toward an ultralight setup or trying to find the right footwear, they've been incredibly helpful. In fact, I'm a longtime hiking "boot" person, and the REI team managed to turn me into a trail-running-shoe believer! That took some convincing. 😄 I especially appreciate that they don't seem interested in simply selling you the most expensive piece of gear. They ask questions, understand what you're trying to accomplish, and help you find what actually makes sense for your hike. Great gear is important on the trail, but knowledgeable people who genuinely understand the outdoors make all the difference. That's why REI continues to be my first stop when I'm preparing for the next adventure.

I had a very strange experience at REI today. I went in to purchase a single item, and the cashier, and older woman, was extremely pushy about getting me to sign up for a membership. I politely declined and told her I wasn’t interested, but she continued to pressure me, so I again said, “No thank you, I’m not interested.” After I declined a second time, her demeanor completely changed. She stared at me, her expression became emotionless, and she appeared to be clenching her jaw. It was incredibly uncomfortable and honestly very odd. From that point on, she became completely silent and simply handed me my purchase. It genuinely felt as though her attitude toward me changed because I declined the membership offer. I completely understand employees being encouraged to promote memberships, but there is a huge difference between making a customer aware of an offer and repeatedly pressuring them after they have clearly declined. Customers should still be treated with the same level of courtesy and professionalism regardless of whether they choose to sign up. This was honestly one of the most bizarre customer service experiences I’ve ever had.
