Ryan was so helpful to me today while shopping for clothing for my upcoming trip. I had become frustrated with trying to find clothes for my body type when he approached and asked if he could help. I explained what I was searching for and he came up with several options and set me up in a fitting room. To my surprise he had selected several items that were a perfect fit! I appreciate his help and REI’s selection for four every body type.

Very nice outdoor goods store. I’ve never been to this company’s store before, and it was nice. Lots of camping, hiking, biking, swimming and other outdoor activities products— for elevated prices. It’s the same type of products you’ll find at any outdoor sporting store, but the prices are pretty hefty. It was disappointing that they don’t offer a military discount, but we still bought a few things we needed.

This review is coming from someone who actually shops at REI.
I’m still asking myself why. I went in looking for a pair of On Cloudmonster running shoes and would have been perfectly fine selecting my own size. Instead, an employee with gray hair and a beard—who always seems to be there—offered unsolicited sizing advice. I never asked for it. He recommended a size larger than what I normally wear, and unfortunately I trusted his recommendation.
I’ve lived with myself my entire life. I know my shoe size. I never buy a size 7, and the Cloudmonster already runs about a half-size large. The shoes ended up being too big, and as someone who runs regularly, I could tell the fit was off immediately. I’ve never worn out a pair of running shoes unevenly in a single summer, but these wore down on one side significantly faster than the other because they didn’t fit properly.
This summer, I went back looking for a pair of Nike Pegasus running shoes. Nike makes them for a reason—they’re one of the best and most popular running shoes available. Unfortunately, the running shoe selection at this REI, and honestly every REI I’ve visited, has been disappointing. They didn’t have the Pegasus in my size (6.5), so a cashier recommended ordering them online. I get it 6 1/2 is small, but it’s not midget size! I ordered a size 7 they didn’t have size 7. I tried to order 7 1/2. I couldn’t get the 7 1/2 needless to say I’m not shopping at these stores anymore. They are not for runners! !
I placed the order and waited nearly two weeks, only to receive an email stating that the shoes were on backorder and would not be shipped. To make matters worse, the refund was issued as store credit instead of being returned to my card.
Between the poor shoe selection, the inaccurate advice, and the frustrating ordering experience, I’m done shopping at REI. Both the Fairfax and Tysons locations have been disappointing. I’m not looking for some rare or obscure item—I’m looking for one of the most common running shoes on the market. Based on my experiences, REI has consistently fallen short when it comes to both inventory and customer service.
Came on a Wednesday evening. Wasn't too crowded. Lots of outdoor gear and supplies here. Staff is extremely friendly, special shoutout to Brad for giving me great recommendations and tips on hiking shoes. The lady at the register was really helpful and nice too. Overall, wonderful shop, especially for hiking needs!

Giving a shout out to Greyson! Fantastic customer service, and INCREDIBLY knowledgeable about their available products and what suited my needs best. I walked in unsure about exactly what camping/backpacking gear to get. Greyson probably saved me at least an hour or two with his expertise, ability to ask the right questions, as well as being able to speak confidently from past experience with the outdoors in general. Awesome experience across the board.
