Great gym! Really nice setting! They have lots of bouldering, top rope, lead climbing, training boards, and a kids climbing area.

This climbing gym is great. Friendly staff, decent variety of bouldering and top ropes at a bunch of skill levels and an overall solid atmosphere. They also have yoga classes and a small gym.
If you're climbing-curious (and you should be) give this place a try! They have day passes with rental shoes/gear and the staff will show you the basics. Even if going in on your own youre likely to meet people to climb with in the future.

Giving this a low rating so management will acknowledge these issues:
1. The gym has been unwilling to increase wages for setters to keep people on board. Currently the gym is understaffed for setters creating large grade disparities in new sets and lack of creativity among sets. I am by no means complaining about the current setter(s) - crg needs to hire more and has had job postings open for months now. Increasing setters/forerunners would help mitigate these issues.
2. Numerous times I have been at the gym later in the evening and have witnessed staff trying to vacuum areas where people are climbing. I went to get on a climb and a staff member turned on the vacuum and started vacuuming in the area where the climb would have ended. I got off and walked away. I have also been lead climbing when someone started vacuuming (music was on too) and my partner was having trouble hearing me communicate. This was an issue because my partner accidentally back cliped. I finally got her attention after continuous yelling.
3. Fitness classes are lacking in availability in this location compared to others crg location in NY.
It seems like the gym just bought a bunch a new holds, but they won't invest in the staff - especially setters - who create the fun problems that people are paying for !!!
Unfortunately, it's the only gym in the area, so I'm forced to stick around. Though, I am less inclined to bring people to the gym as a fun activity when the visit because of these issues.
Frequently Asked Questions About Central Rock Gym - Syracuse
Do I need a Participation Agreement?
Yes, you need a Participation Agreement! Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport. We require a Participation Agreement from every visitor to the gym in order to stay in operation and for insurance purposes.
All customers under the age of 18 MUST have a Participation Agreement signed by a parent or legal guardian. Grandparents, siblings, and teachers do not count.
I have never been climbing before, what are my options?
You have a number of options depending on the Central Rock Gym location you choose to visit.
Bouldering Only Facility:
You can climb on our bouldering walls. Bouldering does not require ropes, instead it focuses on shorter walls (10 – 14 feet tall) with significantly more padding on the ground. Partners are not required for this style of climbing. Check out our First Time Boulderer video for more information. A short bouldering orientation from a CRG staff member is required for this type of climbing.
Rope Facility:
You can take an intro belay class to learn all the requirements for using the facility. This class typically takes a little over 1 hour and can be registered online. Once completed you’ll have full access to the gym and have skills to allow you to belay anywhere in the country!
Many of our rope gym locations have “Staff Belay” which is a program where our staff provide all the assistance to let you climb on ropes without taking classes. Space is limited to 4 climbers per group so pre-registration is recommended. We will pair multiple groups together until we get to the maximum size of 4 participants.
