    Tiny climbing gym but good routes although not very many. They were resetting a portion of the gym so we had access to even less routes when we visited. Also, $80+ for two people plus shoe hire seems insane for a single visit. Maybe that's just typical NY prices for bouldering? Hire shoes were awful which also added to the saltiness since we didn't dare climb hard.

    This is the the cleanest, most comfortable gym in the city. While it’s no where near as big as Vital, it is spacious and you can easily stay out of other climbers’ way. There are no super overhang walls, so if you want anything more than 50° you have to use the boards. The gym has both TB2 and Kilter. The training area is pretty nice, with free weights, plates, benches and one cable machine. There are four hangboards, but sometimes people would be lifting right beside the boards making them unusable. It would be nice to have micros. Edit: I’ve come to notice that they don’t reset the walls often enough. If you only climb overhang, it might feel like they never reset. Docking one star for that.

Do I need a Participation Agreement?

Yes, you need a Participation Agreement! Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport. We require a Participation Agreement from every visitor to the gym in order to stay in operation and for insurance purposes. All customers under the age of 18 MUST have a Participation Agreement signed by a parent or legal guardian. Grandparents, siblings, and teachers do not count.

I have never been climbing before, what are my options?

You have a number of options depending on the Central Rock Gym location you choose to visit. Bouldering Only Facility: You can climb on our bouldering walls. Bouldering does not require ropes, instead it focuses on shorter walls (10 – 14 feet tall) with significantly more padding on the ground. Partners are not required for this style of climbing. Check out our First Time Boulderer video for more information. A short bouldering orientation from a CRG staff member is required for this type of climbing. Rope Facility: You can take an intro belay class to learn all the requirements for using the facility. This class typically takes a little over 1 hour and can be registered online. Once completed you’ll have full access to the gym and have skills to allow you to belay anywhere in the country! Many of our rope gym locations have “Staff Belay” which is a program where our staff provide all the assistance to let you climb on ropes without taking classes. Space is limited to 4 climbers per group so pre-registration is recommended. We will pair multiple groups together until we get to the maximum size of 4 participants.
