My worst experience in a climbing gym so far.
First, the price: this is absurdly expensive for a single session, and it’s the main reason why I won’t come back. Here you don’t buy a simple entry, you pay for a “day pass.” As if anyone actually stays more than 2–3 hours in a climbing gym. If you sell a day pass for $34, then sell a 2-hour pass for $15. Also, no student discount, nice.
Then there are no changing rooms, so if you don’t come already in sports clothes, you’ll have a great time changing in one of the two toilets, which were not clean. I wouldn’t leave anything on that floor.
There are also no lockers available, so you have to leave all your belongings in a wooden box full of chalk. Super nice to retrieve your jacket completely white at the end of the session.
I don’t know when the gym was vacuumed for the last time, but it was covered with chalk. Floors and benches could definitely be cleaned more often, in my opinion, compared to what I’ve seen in other gyms.
And finally, the size of the gym. I don’t mind that some gyms are smaller than others, but when I was there it was crowded and you had to wait for every boulder. So you pay $34 for a tiny gym where you need to wait for every climb, with no option for cheaper happy-hour tickets during the week to avoid rush hours.

Love this branch and how there are a lot more route options for beginners and shorter climbers. If we didn't live out of town, this would be our go-to branch for sure, but we have to settle for after work climbs when we're already a bit tired. Otherwise, we love climbing here.

Great bouldering gym. The weights area is very small though and gets crowded when the gym is busy. Grading is generally soft, especially on slab.

Started climbing here as a beginner and it’s a great gym. Always updating their walls and the people I’ve met her are awesome. Climbers and staff alike.

Pretty new and clean CRG in a very convenient location next to a T stop and Bluebikes station. Grading can be a touch soft and problems skew easier for taller climbers. Wish they had a bit more diversity of problems or features, ideally more overhang.
Frequently Asked Questions About Central Rock Gym - Fenway
Do I need a Participation Agreement?
Yes, you need a Participation Agreement! Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport. We require a Participation Agreement from every visitor to the gym in order to stay in operation and for insurance purposes.
All customers under the age of 18 MUST have a Participation Agreement signed by a parent or legal guardian. Grandparents, siblings, and teachers do not count.
I have never been climbing before, what are my options?
You have a number of options depending on the Central Rock Gym location you choose to visit.
Bouldering Only Facility:
You can climb on our bouldering walls. Bouldering does not require ropes, instead it focuses on shorter walls (10 – 14 feet tall) with significantly more padding on the ground. Partners are not required for this style of climbing. Check out our First Time Boulderer video for more information. A short bouldering orientation from a CRG staff member is required for this type of climbing.
Rope Facility:
You can take an intro belay class to learn all the requirements for using the facility. This class typically takes a little over 1 hour and can be registered online. Once completed you’ll have full access to the gym and have skills to allow you to belay anywhere in the country!
Many of our rope gym locations have “Staff Belay” which is a program where our staff provide all the assistance to let you climb on ropes without taking classes. Space is limited to 4 climbers per group so pre-registration is recommended. We will pair multiple groups together until we get to the maximum size of 4 participants.
