If they don't have it in store, they offer to help you order it. I've purchased camping and hiking items at only a slight premium over Amazon. Worth it to try things on or hold them in your hand before deciding.

I tried explaining that I almost never shop at REI and the membership is not of much use to me - went nowhere. If someone tells you they don't want the membership, don't keep pushing the membership. Most other retailers with loyalty programmes seem to understand this. By acting pushy and condescending you basically guaranteed that all future outdoor gear I buy will be from one of REI's competitors.
