Simpson Law, PA, was established to provide a comprehensive, compassionate and convenient way for individuals and families, parents and professionals, to plan for the future security of their loved ones in Montgomery County and Howard County in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Working with many clients over the years, Suzanne recognizes the spiritual fulfillment her clients experience when they know they have done their very best to provide for their family's safety and security now and into the unknown future.
I used this firm previously for estate work. They charged a flat fee and did fine work. Which is why I came back to them for a guardianship of property matter for my daughter. That's where my experience changed.
Rate transparency: When I questioned billing at $650/hour, I found that neither engagement letter I'd signed with them named guardianship work. One covered an unrelated trust/POA/deed matter, the other estate administration. I was pointed to whichever letter happened to contain rate language supporting their billing that said their rates may increase at the beginning of each year, rather than a clear fee agreement for the actual matter. I also was never told my rate had increased or what it increased to. I only learned this while disputing an invoice.
Lack of proactive guidance: Court orders had to be amended multiple times because it seemed the firm didn't anticipate needing specific language allowing funds to be held in brokerage/advisory accounts. This required additional hearings and mounting fees to fix, months into the case.
Missed deadline, no accountability: I missed a filing deadline I was never notified about. When I asked why, I was told I should've known from a guardianship orientation video the court had me watch months earlier, rather than getting a simple reminder from my own attorney. I understand it's ultimately my responsibility to file the required documents, but the whole point in hiring a lawyer was so they could help guide me through such filings.
Unhelpful referrals: When I asked for guidance setting up accounts to meet the court's requirements, I was pointed to financial advisors with no experience in this type of account. I ended up finding a qualified advisor myself.
In summary, they seem to do solid work on routine estate and will matters, but this case showed they're not equipped to handle anything more complex than that. I wish they'd been upfront about this rather than taking it on and letting it drag out for months, costing me many thousands of dollars and real mental stress.

The professionals at Simpson Law are very thorough and knowledgable. Suzanne Simpson and her staff took their time with my 90 year old mother. They treated her with respect and explained everything extremely well. Their knowledge of estate planning and elder law is impressive. We trust Simpson Law.
