Horrible experience, condescending AND incorrect employee. Save your money and go anywhere else!
I was a new pool owner, and had just moved into a home with a green pool. I wanted to care for the pool myself so I had researched for weeks before moving in and was prepared to tackle it. I followed the trouble-free pool SLAM method. The pool turned blue, but just wouldn't clear up, and I found myself with a sand like sludge at the bottom.
The previous owners had not left behind the vacuum head for vacuum to waste, and the rechargeable vacuum I was using was not meant for such a large job. So I headed down to this store to get a vacuum head and vacuum plate.
Being a new pool owner, when the employee approached me at this store, I decided it couldn't hurt to ask for advice. I explained my problem, and what I was looking for.
She did show me the vacuum heads, but then started asking me more questions. I tried to explain the setup, and that I wasn't sure I needed an extra hose, because our system had a pipe that already ran to the street.
This is where things started turning unpleasant, because she just did not understand, and told me that it was set up she had never heard of. She seemed very doubtful and I tried to explain more, and with a condescending smirk she told me that things just didn't work like that. I did try to explain further, but I become flustered when people are not being nice, so I did stumble on my words.
I eventually showed her a picture of what I was dealing with, and explained the sludge. She told me that it was obviously dead algae.
She asked me what I was doing to deal with it, and I explained that I had put together a guide for myself based on the research I'd done online, and explained the SLAM method. She literally laughed at me. She said that the stuff that she would sell me could have cleared it up in just a couple of days, and people online don't know what they are talking about. She explained this to me with the attitude that she thought I was a complete idiot.
I was extremely put off by this experience, and decided I would take my business elsewhere. I was not convinced that the sandy sludge at the bottom was just dead algae. I had already wondered if there was an issue with the filter, and had already planned on opening it up after I vacuumed the bottom.
So, when I opened up the filter for the first time, I discovered that the manifold had a HUGE hole in it, which had been causing the DE powder to be blown back into the pool, and much of it was deposited on the bottom. The sandy sludge was mostly dirty DE powder.
Since I already had the filter open, I did not want to wait for an order to come in, and decided to risk going to a different Leslie's Pool Store. No way was I willing to step foot into THIS store again.
The employee at the other Leslie's was extremely helpful, and we found the manifold I needed right away, no condescending attitude.
I replaced the manifold, and what do you know? The next day I could clearly see the bottom of the deep end, and the day after the pool was nearly sparkling.
It turns out the SLAM method I had used HAD actually been successful, and I only needed to replace the manifold to get a clear pool. If I had listened to the unkind and overconfident employee at this store, I would have spent a bunch of money on unnecessary chemicals, and still been left with a cloudy pool that was not filtering properly.
