I frequently shop at Food Lion because it is my local grocery store, and until today, I have generally been satisfied with my shopping experiences.
During my visit today, I noticed chuck roasts advertised for $6.99 each. Recognizing this as an exceptionally good price, I decided to purchase five roasts, intending to prepare one for dinner and freeze the others for future meals.
However, when I proceeded to checkout, I discovered that the roasts were ringing up at approximately $18 each. When I questioned the discrepancy, I was informed that the advertised price was intended to be $6.99 per pound, not $6.99 each.
My concern is straightforward: The sign advertised $6.99 EACH, not $6.99 PER POUND. These are two entirely different pricing structures, and the distinction is neither insignificant nor open to interpretation.
As a consumer, I should be able to rely on the prices a retailer chooses to advertise. I made my purchasing decision based on the clearly displayed price, and I do not believe customers should bear the consequences of a retailer’s failure to accurately advertise its merchandise.
Whether this was an innocent mistake or an oversight, the result was misleading advertising that directly influenced my decision to purchase more than I otherwise would have.
I believe the appropriate response would have been to honor the advertised price and promptly correct the signage to prevent further confusion.
What concerns me most is the precedent this creates. If retailers can advertise products at one price and simply explain away the discrepancy at checkout, what assurance do consumers have that advertised prices are reliable?
I am not asking Food Lion to provide an unreasonable discount. I am asking the company to stand behind the prices it publicly advertises and accept responsibility when those advertisements are incorrect.
I would appreciate an explanation of how Food Lion intends to address this situation and what steps will be taken to ensure that customers are not misled by inaccurate pricing in the future.
