Peter Kern Library feels genuinely hidden rather than like a normal bar wearing a fake speakeasy costume. Dark wood, packed bookshelves, a fireplace and cocktail menus concealed inside old encyclopedias create the kind of atmosphere that makes checking the time feel disrespectful. The drinks are named after literary characters, which is considerably more sophisticated than ordering “the blue one.” It’s intimate, mysterious and just pretentious enough to feel special without becoming unbearable. This is where you take someone when you want them to believe you know Knoxville better than they do. Come for one drink. Accidentally lose the evening. Five stars—and finally, a library where the drinking improves your reading.
