Walk in, tell a human being you want a burger and fries, hand them money, and five minutes later you’re questioning your life choices while eating approximately 14 pounds of Cajun fries. Simple. Beautiful. American. Unfortunately, Five Guys has decided to ketchup with technology and install self-ordering kiosks. What a missed-steak. Ordering a cheeseburger now feels like applying for a mortgage. Tap screen. Find burger. Customize burger. Confirm burger. Reconfirm burger. Would you like fries? What size? What seasoning? Drink? Tip? Blood type? Mother’s maiden name? By the time I finally submitted my order, the peanuts had filed a missing persons report. It legitimately took me twice as long to order from a computer as it used to take telling an actual person, “Cheeseburger, all the way.” And unless my eyes are playing some kind of cruel condiment trick on me, the prices seem to have gotten beefier too. Apparently the kiosks weren’t brought in to lettuce save money. Five Guys, I’m begging you: don’t burger your reputation with this nonsense. Your whole appeal was great burgers, ridiculous fries, and a simple old-school experience. Bring back the cashiers. I don’t want to troubleshoot lunch. I don’t want to swipe, scroll, tap, customize, confirm, reconfirm, create an account, accept cookies, update my firmware, and restart the router just to get a bacon cheeseburger. I just want one of the Five Guys to take my order. Surely ONE of them is available.
