Stopped by Food Lion yesterday looking for steaks. The selection wasn't exactly winning any awards, but after some digging I found one that was acceptable.
While I was looking, there was a lady stocking meat from boxes. She never spoke, so naturally I assumed she was stocking shelves, not the butcher. I needed a steak cut in half, so I walked over to the service door with the bell that's specifically there for customers needing assistance.
I stood there for about five minutes. She saw me standing there. Eventually she asked, "Are you looking for me?" followed by, "I'm over here."
Well, ma'am, I wasn't aware I was supposed to recognize employees by sight. I don't work there, and considering you were actively stocking shelves and hadn't spoken a single word, how exactly was I supposed to know?
I asked if she could cut the steak in half. She refused because it came prepackaged. Now, unless Food Lion has recently invented steaks that recalculate their own price when sliced, I'm pretty sure it would have remained the same steak with the same price tag—just in two pieces.
So I went back to searching.
Then the entire store lost power.
Now here's where things got interesting.
When the lights were on, I couldn't get anyone's attention. When the lights went out, suddenly I felt like I had her undivided attention. Maybe it was my imagination, but I got the distinct feeling she was watching me like I was about to make a run for the parking lot with a ribeye tucked under each arm.
I stood there expecting a backup generator or at least some instructions. Instead, another employee came marching from the front of the store and told me to head to the front. No "Excuse me, ma'am." No "Sorry for the inconvenience." No explanation. Just a command.
The whole interaction rubbed me the wrong way. I was polite, gave nobody a reason to be rude, yet somehow managed to get treated like I was either invisible or suspicious.
At that point I told her, "Look, I don't know what Black woman is sleeping with your husband, but it isn't me."
Then I left.
And honestly, those two ladies may have done me a favor.
I drove about a mile farther down the road to Piggly Wiggly. Their lights were on, the staff were friendly, and they had a much better selection of steaks.
So in the end, I got better service, better steak options, and a better shopping experience.
God really does work in mysterious ways, doesn't He?

Got what I needed and got out. I don't like the fact they have taken very good parking spots and made them into pick up only spots.
