- JJJoshuaSep 1, 20263.0I came to Bojangles hungry. I drove off forever changed. First came the fries. Dry, hollow little sticks of deception. Not a potato in sight. Just crispy yellow tunnels filled with hot air and broken promises. I bit into one and heard an echo. Each one a tiny golden husk, as though the potato had packed its belongings and moved out weeks ago. Then came the biscuit. I don’t know who hurt that biscuit, but somebody cremated it. Burnt. Crunchy. Dense. This thing didn’t crumble—it fractured. I’m pretty sure archaeologists could dig one of these up 4,000 years from now and still butter it. I tapped it on the table and three people turned around because they thought somebody knocked on the door. I briefly considered keeping it in the glovebox as an emergency glass breaker. Then I met the Cajun filet... That chicken had been cooked so aggressively it had evolved into a construction material. I took one bite and my jaw filed for workers’ comp. I’ve handled saddle leather with more tenderness. I could have punched two holes in that filet, added a buckle, and sold it on Etsy as a belt. At one point I stopped chewing and just stared at it, wondering if I was supposed to eat it or resole a boot with it. By the end of the meal, I wasn’t full. I was tired. Emotionally. Physically. Dentally. Bojangles, I didn’t come in looking for a survival challenge. I wanted chicken, fries, and a biscuit. Instead, I received drywall, a roofing shingle, and several pieces of haunted packing material. Somewhere, a chicken gave its life for this meal. And I feel like we owe that chicken an apology.
