I finally got the opportunity to stop by Roy's Grille in Irmo, SC; which I follow on Facebook and let me tell you it was worth it! If you're looking for genuine southern cuisine, Roy's Grille will not disappoint.
I went on Soulfood Sunday in the afternoon and when you pull up the smoke from the grill is in the air! Love that!
I had brisket...which was good (the absolute best I've ever had is Bobby Qs in Phx, AZ). But the oxtail was THE best oxtail I've ever tasted in my entire life! Just downright lip smacking, slap yo Momma delicious!
My sides (2 dinners) were string beans, mac n cheese, fried cabbage, sweet potato fries, and candied yams. Everything was very tasty.
Chef Williams is a seasoning master. It's not just salt/pepper his favors are complex, but somehow work together to make a masterpiece in your mouth.
The meat servings were very generous, but the sides...not so much. I find dining in usually gets you better portions in most places.
The young man that took my order was very nice and helpful since it was my first time there. A big plus, no line! But I did wait about 10 minutes or so; which is nothing.
As for the atmosphere, I appreciate the fact that there was no blasting music. I absolutely hate that! However, it was really hot in the restaurant. Not sure why that was, but I asked the order taker how he stood the heat, and he said he was used to it. Poor fella!
I really wanted to take a picture with Chef Williams, but I was told I just missed him. *sad face*
I highly recommend Roy's Grille. If you give this food a bad review, you just don't like down and dirty authentic, well seasoned, lip smacking, soul food.
Please give it try, you will not be disappointed.
Hey Chef, if you see this review, I'm Momma P's Sweet Tymes on Facebook and I make a mean southern pound cake just like my grandma taught me. I love the fact that I you named your place after your grandfather and learned how to season food from your momma nem! *chef's kiss* to our ancestors!
