Shokudô is a modern Japanese izakaya led by chef Masatomo “Masa” Hamaya. Centered on an open robata grill, the menu showcases ramen, yakitori, tempura, and hand rolls, crafted with seasonality and precision. The space draws on wabi-sabi simplicity and farmhouse warmth, balanced by the energy of a lively Japanese beer garden. A place for sharing, gathering, and discovering flavor in its purest form.
I honestly don’t understand the 5 star reviews ! We ate there last night and the service was dreadful. The cocktails were good and a few of the dishes were ok but the tuna crudo was one of the worst I’ve had anywhere. The hot dishes were cold - every glass of wine took forever to be delivered - the whole fish came with a very spicy sauce that was never mentioned in the description.
We asked to see the “Japanese” garden in back and it was very underwhelming. We had high hopes but will likely not go back

Moved to SC from NYC and was in the mood for a spontaneous solo date. Came across this spot on a whim, and am soo glad I did. Such welcoming and attentive staff, which was only the cherry on top in addition to the flavorful and palette expansive meals. I wish I could’ve remembered what I exactly got, as the only thing I was focused on the experience each plate took me on. Shout out to my waiter Jonah, and the owner/manager who was in charge on 05/16!!

I hate to give a mediocre review. The food was less than expected for o-ku's sister restaurant.
The edemame was both over and under chared. The bok coy was bland and over saturated with oil.
Mushrooms are a must order!
Pork dumplings were okay. Better than most in the city but no comparison to what I ate in japan last month.
Yucca fries were amazing. Y'all need to sell that house made lime/salt by the gallon!
The twist on an old fashioned fell woefully short. Too much bitters + the sesame twist made the drunk unrecognizable as an old fashioned.
We will not be back. Charleston has too many amazing restaurants to gamble on this one.

Shokudo is a must try! Top notch food that is reasonably affordable. Located on King right by the visitor center parking lot, walk right over into a fresh modern vibe. Notice the dry aging cooler full of fish - interesting! The aroma in the place is intoxicating. We ordered a mess of things all were rich and filling. First course were the bok choy, shaka shaka fries, and the daily mushroom. All were delicious and easily sharable. Then the duck and lamb skewers. These were something special, particularly the lamb. Lastly was the OG ramen and the crab rice. Ramen is some of the best in Charleston. At $16, this is a steal. Rice is good, a tad salty but solid.
We left absolutely stuffed with takaways, 3 cocktails at $150 (pre-tip. We would have been perfectly full and without booz could have gotten the bill sub $100. For top tier, super rich, high end food in Charleston this is an absolute steal.
What is notable about the menu is there is something for everyone on the menu. Unique!

First time here. Very happy with my Sunday evening on the bar patio experience. Came for the vinyl DJ and got more than anticipated. I appreciated the bar specific menu, and the chef preparing my food outdoors. Wagyu dumplings were the best item on the menu. Had no clue edamame could be prepared spectacularly until I ate it here. In fact, I won't order it anywhere else now. The fact Halley provided stellar service and could create craft cocktails made my experience even better. I liked it better before the things got "popular". Music got louder and the crowd noise was cafeteriaish.
