The sandwich was dry, the line was long, and I didn’t really understand the hype. So when I found myself at a Chick-fil-A in the U.S., I decided to give it one more chance. The employee at the counter even joked, “Give us another chance.” I’m glad I did. Now I finally understand why a restaurant that closes every Sunday can still rank among the top fast-food chains in America. The first time I ordered a regular chicken sandwich. This time I went for a spicy deluxe version, and the difference was huge. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, with a great balance of black pepper seasoning and spicy chicken flavor. It instantly reminded me of the best spicy chicken burgers I enjoyed growing up. The chicken strips were solid as well—nothing revolutionary, but definitely good. The real surprise, however, was the famous Chick-fil-A Sauce. Nobody offered it to me in Toronto, but this time the cashier asked which sauce I wanted and recommended the signature one. Wow. This sauce could probably make almost anything taste good. It’s smooth, slightly sweet, smoky, and rich. After looking up the ingredients, it all made sense: it’s basically a brilliant combination of BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, and mustard. Smoky, creamy, tangy, and sweet all at the same time. No wonder people love it. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in the United States.
