  First time trying American Way Smokehouse in Independence, and it was really impressive. The burnt end sandwich was absolutely delicious and packed with flavor, and the French fries were some of the best I’ve had from a BBQ place. Everything tasted fresh and well-made. The setup is simple and easy: you order and pay at the counter, grab a table, and then the staff brings the food out to you. Even with that style of service, the staff was very friendly, attentive, and made the experience really enjoyable. Overall, this is definitely a great BBQ spot in Independence and somewhere I’d absolutely recommend to anyone looking for quality barbecue in the area!

  First time visiting, Emerson and Keira were exactly who I would want serving my customers. Both young ladies were knowledgeable and helpful with suggestions and providing excellent top shelf recommendations. The brisket was perfectly smoked and cut. The flavor was spot on. Their original BBQ sauce is the best I've tasted. The ribs were perfectly smoked and juicy. We will be back! Thank you for the samples of the beans and coleslaw!

  First time in, food is absolutely delicious!!! Thanks to Jennifer we made some amazing picks, she was so helpful and friendly. Burnt ends amazing! Tender and full of flavor, the pulled pork juicy , tender and an amazing sandwich. We got a sample of the pastrami OMG run and have it, absolutely the best I’ve ever had. In addition we tried the fried pickles another win!! I definitely cannot wait to come back!!

  Very disappointing first experience with American Way BBQ this past Saturday. We placed a large prepaid pickup order over the phone totaling $408.27 for our son’s birthday party. The order included brisket, pulled pork, burnt ends, and jalapeño sausage with a scheduled pickup time of 2:30 PM. When I arrived, I waited roughly five minutes before anyone acknowledged me even though multiple employees were working nearby. Once I was finally helped, there was confusion regarding the BBQ sauces despite discussing over the phone that we wanted to decide the sauce selections during pickup for our guests. After being told it would “be a few minutes,” the employee assisting me repeatedly shifted attention toward newer walk in customers while I continued waiting on a prepaid $400+ order that should have already been organized and ready for pickup. The most frustrating part was the handling of the pickles included with the order. Instead of preparing them with the order, I was told to grab containers myself from the self serve lobby area. Since nothing was labeled and I was already being rushed while late for the party, I ended up grabbing the wrong pickles entirely. The overall interaction felt dismissive and unprofessional throughout the process. At one point, the employee even commented that I would “probably have to make two trips” while appearing more focused on moving me aside for other customers than actually assisting me. For a first experience, especially on a large prepaid catering style order, I expected significantly better communication, organization, and customer service. I waited several business days after attempting to contact the business privately before posting this review because I wanted to resolve things directly first, but I have not received a response.

  We both got a half rack of ribs and we loved the ribs! I got sides of macaroni and cheese (delicious) and French fries (very well seasoned!) The side of bread is fresh and yummy. My boyfriend got the Cole slaw and said it’s tasty and unlike any Cole slaw he’s ever had - it has a spicy kick to it. He got the potato salad and said that was good, also. Shout out to Jenn & Conner for the great service & meal! Highly recommend this place.
