Mediocre food and anniversary dinner that I wished we spent elsewhere.
My husband and I went to Komo to celebrate our anniversary and it was one of the most disappointing experiences I’ve had. For an upscale restaurant inside Four Seasons hotel, I expected warmth, great attention to details, amazing food that is worth the price but I didn’t get any of that.
From the start, we couldn’t make a reservation for 2 people and thought it was because they didn’t have 2 spots. But then we realized we can book it separately for 1 for the same time. We did that and decided to arrive early and let hostess know and ensure we sit together. When we arrived, we explained what happened and the hostess confirmed she would sit us together and was very pleasant. We were seated in the corner with the worst view possible even though there were 5 open seats in the middle of the counter seating and later on it was not taken by a large group but was taken by 2 separate couples maybe 30 minutes and 45 minutes later after we were seated. So I’m not sure why we got the worst seats. There also was a comment made about the family of 4 sitting next to us, that they would be leaving soon. We haven’t said anything and they were there well before us and have all the rights to be there as paying customers. Then we were brought some little fans in front of us because the corner tends to get hot. Great, worst view possible and now I have a little fan in front of me because the corner gets hot. It was an odd and uncomfortable interaction that didn’t match the setting of an upscale establishment.
We ordered 2 omakase experiences. My husband ordered 7-course omakase, I ordered omakase light (5-course omakase). Our reservations were for 7-course and I remember online it was the only option available but when we were there it turned out you can get anything else. 5-course omakase is a well balanced portion and I was very full by the end of it. I wish they did a better job with the pacing or explanation on why I have a break and my husband has another course. I know we have a different number of courses but there was no commentary about it and interactions were stiff and minimal. I think a quick explanation before hand would be great or even during the service but that was not the case. My yuzu margarita was also disappointing. I could barely taste any yuzu, overall tasted like a margarita and drunk was sitting on the counter. No one checked on why drink was sitting on the counter and whether I liked it or wanted anything else. My husband ordered sake pairing and really enjoyed it.
Another thing I noticed that really bothered me. I watched chef Rachel wearing gloves while making rolls but then also opening drawers and touching other services in the same gloves and then back to touching the food she was making. The gloves are as clean as the last surface you touched so seeing seeing drawers being open in the same gloves feels like a miss on some of the practices.
Service was efficient but impersonal. Apart from taking our orders and bringing it back, there were no interactions. We didn’t even get enough time to look at the drinks menu before being asked what we wanted to drink. No suggestion or recommendation were made either. Small details like paper wrapper from chopsticks sitting on our countertop the entire meal without anyone to notice.
This experience made me appreciate how much I value attention to details and good food in DC and we have had so many great experiences there. At Komo the food was fine but service, attention to details, pacing were not from what I expected from a hotel restaurant of this reputation.
I would not come here for a special occasion. This felt more as of a quick service sushi counter that you can get elsewhere. We are planning to celebrate our other milestones elsewhere and not in Komo.

We had a wonderful honeymoon stay at the Four Seasons Maui—the hotel was beautiful, our room was excellent, and the staff throughout the property were genuinely warm and welcoming.
Unfortunately, our dinner at Komo was very disappointing, especially given the prices and the Four Seasons standard we expected. Some dishes that were supposed to be hot arrived cold, and the sushi had very little fish and was almost completely flavorless. The sashimi platter we ordered which was supposedly “flown in from Japan” was completely tasteless and seemed like a very low quality of the fish selection that was there. We ended up leaving much of our food unfinished. We were also seated in an area which was essentially the hotel lobby with people walking past us and nearly bumping into our table the whole dinner.
The service was fine but unfortunately, the food was not. We hope it was simply an off night, but based on our experience, we were very disappointed. Not one to make a review but this was just not what we expected. The other restaurants in the hotel were a much better choice than Komo.

We had a lovely night at KOMO, loved the mystery box and had to come back another night to try the omakase!
This is the best sushi we've had outside of Japan, likely due to them shipping fish direct from Tokyo.
The standard nigiri was fantastic, including my favorite o-toro. The chef also has some amazing more creative nigiri and the "salmon trout" they have in place of salmon we liked way better than normal salmon.
We found the portion sizes to be very generous compared to other high end sushi restaurants and never left feeling hungry.
The atmosphere is very nice. You're seated in the gorgeous lobby of the Four Seasons with a fountain in the middle and if you come at the right time a live musician playing a short ways away.
To top it all off their staff is absolutely lovely. The manager, Oscar, is a true gem and a delight to talk to. He was so excited to see us again when we returned and made sure to personally walk us to our seats. He checked in during our meal too and it's clear that he wants to do whatever he can to ensure everyone has a great experience.
Our server, Jackeline, was there both nights and provided us with excellent recommendations. She's knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and has such a sunny personality. Definitely sit in her section if you can!
We'd love to come back to KOMO next time we're in Maui and hope to see them both again!
