In Vietnamese, we don't say "I love you." Instead, we say, "Did you eat yet?"
An overdue post from our last trip to Oahu for one of the best meals we ever had. We came to Saigon Grill on the recommendation of the lovely couple who operates Cloud Nine Cafe (5 star review for them too). We were halfway through our trip and started to miss home so we asked for their best Vietnamese seafood recommendations and they sent us here.
We ordered the giant grilled prawns, coconut escargot, razor clams buried in a heaping plate of morning glory spinach, and manilla clam soup. Everything was super fresh and tasty. Razor clams and manilla clam soup were our favorites. And their dipping fish sauce was perfect - not spicy so you'll have to add chili if you like it hot. The prices were comparable to what we pay in San Jose for the same dishes at the same level of quality.
In reading the reviews to prepare for our dinner feast, I saw references made to the customer service or lack thereof. From what I gathered, this is a family operation. The husband takes the order, the wife leads the kitchen staff, and grandma helps bring the dishes out. Our order was taken without any fuss, no smiles either, it was a very straightforward interaction. Some might call it curt but my recommendation is to not take it personal and don't let it prevent you from trying this place out. The lady of the house (truck) brought out our dishes with a joy rooted in pride of ownership. She knew we were going to enjoy her cooking. Grandma brought out the rest of the dishes with confident nod that this was going to be a good meal. The family team carried on with each other throughout the night in Vietnamese about food, competing recipes, and a lively debate as to who is the greatest Vietnamese singer of all time.
Enjoy the food, enjoy the Oahu breeze, and enjoy the vibe. The greatest expression of affection is in the meal that is prepared. Does not serve beer.
