They have everything you need for your hotel or vacation, and I also like picking up a bottle of local Hawaiian rum. It makes a fun souvenir to bring home, or you can grab some juice and make Mai Tais or other fruity Hawaiian drinks back at the hotel. But the real reason I’m leaving this review is the poke. People seriously sleep on Safeway’s fresh ahi tuna poke! I’ve had poke all over the Hawaiian Islands, and Safeway consistently has some of my favorite. There are obviously tons of amazing local poke shops throughout Hawaii, and you’re going to find great poke almost everywhere, but I personally love the quality and consistency of Safeway’s. One of my favorite things to do is go to Safeway in the morning, grab some of their fresh ahi poke from the seafood counter, then head over to the deli and get a cup of hot steamed rice. Fresh poke over warm rice makes an amazing breakfast or lunch, and it’s simple, fresh, and delicious. I’ve done this at Safeway on different Hawaiian islands, and the poke has consistently been great. I honestly prefer it over a lot of the dedicated poke spots I’ve tried. It might sound strange recommending a grocery store for poke when you’re visiting Hawaii, but don’t overlook it. If you love fresh ahi poke, definitely give the Safeway seafood counter a try!
