Safeway Deli — Where Sandwich Artistry Goes to Die (Sometimes)
The person behind the counter assembling my sandwich appeared to be operating under one of two theories: either they were brand new to the concept of sandwiches, or they simply could not be bothered. What makes this particularly impressive is that the customer stands right there, watching the whole performance unfold in real time — a live audience, and still, no effort.
The deli experience is best described as a dice roll. Some days you get an employee who treats your lunch like a calling. Other days, you get someone who seems to view the sourdough roll as a personal adversary. Cutting a roll in half is not, I must stress, a surgical procedure. It is not splitting the atom. And yet.
I ordered the grilled chicken breast, which — when prepared by someone who has heard of the concept of “layering” — is actually quite good. Sliced into four or five pieces, fanned out like they’ve watched even one cooking show. Instead, I received what appeared to be the entire breast, uncut, plopped down with the enthusiasm of someone filing their taxes.
To their credit, the sandwiches are still a decent value. Which, honestly, is the only thing standing between this deli and a full spiral into chaos. Points for affordability. Points deducted for the coin flip required to determine whether your sandwich will be a triumph or a cry for help.

This review is for the pharmacy technician, Jennifer, and clerk, Marina.
I faced a challenge getting a medication that insurance was denying. The technician was able to identify a number of "coupon" services that would greatly reduce my out of pocket costs. She obtained an exemption from the pharmacist and my prescription was filled the next day.
The clerk was also very customer-service focused. She even got me a in-store coupon for groceries because this was technically a new prescription under a different insurance.
Overall, I had a great experience. They ensured I got my medication at the cheapest price and got it promptly. Five stars!

To be quite honest the only reasons I continue to go to this safeway is 1) it is located 2 minutes away from my house and 2) there is one employee named Deanna i believe who is amazing and makes this store bearable. Elsewhere, I have been treated like garbage several times by a couple of employees there. One of which was the night time store manager named Bree. Thank God she is no longer in that position. She has profiled me and my husband, embarrassed me by screaming at me in front of the entire store, told me I was not allowed back in HER store unless I gave my purse to the customer service counter every time I walked in the store. I have never stolen anything every my entire life but because I said hi to someone who I guess has been caught stealing she said I was guilty by association, and she didn't want scum like me in HER store. When I asked how to contact corporate to file a complaint, she laughed in my face and said she makes more money than anybody in that store. So the likeliness that corporate will listen to anything. I have to say is pretty much none. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Who has on several occasions reached out to safeway to address the situation, and surprise surprise, they have yet to receive any type of response. If it weren't for deanna, I would never step foot back in that store ever again. She has stood up for me even though she really doesn't know me. And that to me means the world, because that manager made my life miserable for months. And I don't even wanna get into the prices they are charging now. Or the fact that they charge us for paper bags, which is ridiculous Considering they were only supposed to be charging us for plastic bags, which are banned.
It's such a shame that the Mendocino Safeway store has gone downhill so badly. Because I used to love that store. I used to love the employees. I used to have good conversations with the employees. Nobody was ever rude to any customers. And now, all I see on a consistent basis is customers being treated poorly being made fun of being embarrassed in front of the entire store. The quality of employees has gone downhill. Considerably. Safeway really should be embarrassed. I watched one manager or shift leader or whatever. He or she is to that store completely belittle and make fun of and older customer. Who bowed her head to him in appreciation And he then proceeded to at the top of his lungs Scream, "you're weird. What's wrong with you? Get out of my store. You're not allowed in here anymore. Why are you bowing? She's a freak." and then had her escorted by security out of the store. The thing about that employee is he wears nails that are so long that she could scratch somebody's eyes out. I'm sorry he works in a store where there's food and most stores have policies for their employees that state. You can't have your nails a certain length because it becomes at health hazard. I know I sound like I'm just complaining and whining it. But these are some serious problems that this store is having and I know i'm not the only customer who has had horrible experiences at this store. It's just sad and quite frankly, safeway needs to do better.
