I’ve been shopping at the Safeway in Rivermark Plaza regularly since it’s very close to my home, and my boyfriend and I usually go there every week. Unfortunately, we had a very unpleasant experience today with an employee named Rosemary at the self-checkout area. We asked for assistance scanning a 40-pack of bottled water, and instead of helping politely, Rosemary responded in a very rude and aggressive manner. She said, “You need to lift it. If it’s hard for you to lift, how did you put it in the cart in the first place?” Her tone and attitude were extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. She then scanned the item aggressively while clearly showing frustration toward us, even though we were completely polite and calm. What made the situation even worse was that as we were leaving, she sarcastically faced us and said, “Are you sure you don’t need help lifting them?” That comment was unnecessary, mocking, and incredibly disrespectful. We did nothing to provoke this behavior, and no customer should be treated this way for simply asking for help. Rosemary’s attitude was shockingly unprofessional and inappropriate for someone working in customer service. I truly hope Safeway takes this complaint seriously and addresses the issue, because this experience left us very uncomfortable and disappointed.

At the Rivermark Plaza San Jose Safeway, my experience with Rosemarie (rosemary) at self-checkout was very unpleasant. I asked if there was a way to scan a heavy water item without lifting it. She rudely asked, ‘How did you lift it in the first place?’ Then she scanned it with a bad attitude. When we left, she sarcastically said, ‘Make sure you get some help since it’s heavy.’ This made us feel mocked and disrespected. I hope management addresses this.

I would like to compliment a staff member named “Mumem” or “Mumen” — I’m very sorry if I got his name slightly wrong. He is a tall young employee working at the Rivermark Safeway. I live near this Safeway and visit it two or three times a week, but this was the first time I truly experienced such warm and thoughtful customer service from a staff member. I was standing in front of the nearly empty Häagen-Dazs freezer during the sale, trying to figure out what to do, when he approached me and offered to check whether they had the flavor I wanted. That alone already surprised me. Then he said he would go take pictures for me, ran to the back storage area, and used his personal phone to take photos of all the Häagen-Dazs flavors they still had in stock. He came back and showed me the pictures so I could choose what I wanted. I’ve never had this kind of experience at Safeway before, and I was extremely impressed by how proactive and thoughtful he was. Thanks to his help, I left very satisfied with my shopping experience. I sincerely hope his manager recognizes him for this outstanding customer service and that he receives the praise or reward he deserves.

Moving from New York at 21 to pursue my career was something I knew wouldn’t be easy but I never expected racism to be the hardest part. I’ve been shopping at this Safeway regularly, at least twice a week for months. Over time, a pattern has become impossible to ignore: I am consistently monitored, and approached in ways that feel targeted and super uncomfortable. One example. After finishing at self-checkout and paying in full (!!), a male employee walked over, took my receipt directly from the machine(???), and asked, “Would you like your receipt?” while looking over my total. It was unnecessary. If I didn’t want my receipt, I would have left it... Another time, while scanning a small number of items, a worker stood directly beside me watching. Then a security guard came behind me, clearly looked at my screen, gave her a thumbs up, and she said “thank you” and walked away. Exactly what could I have done to warrant that? My existence alone feels like a crime and it’s been hurtful to say the least. And these aren’t isolated incidents. It’s become a consistent experience. What makes this especially difficult is that I had never experienced racism or microaggressions like this before moving here. Now, every time I walk into this store, I feel anxious. I find myself overthinking everything, damn checking my own pockets, forcing a smile, trying to move quickly, holding my receipt clearly, just to avoid being treated like I’m doing something wrong. I have a sweet tooth, so sometimes at checkout, I take my time looking through the candy to see if there’s any speaking to me. Dare I spend more than 5 seconds, and their whole team will be watching me. Grocery shopping should be routine. Instead, it has become stressful, humiliating, exhausting and EXTREMELY demoralizing. I’m writing this not just to vent, but because no one should feel this way doing something as basic as buying food. I hope management takes this seriously and reflects on how customers are being treated.

It’s about 5:40 pm and I came for a couple lbs of ground pork but couldn’t find any on the shelves. So, I asked a guy if I can buy pork bellies and they help me to grind it. But the guy told me I should have come earlier if I need this kind of service as the butcher guy had left. Asked another woman who wore all kinds of rings through various parts of her face. But she helped me nothing. So, I walked away and had to go to 99 Ranch to get my ground pork. Very bad service and indifferent employees. Won’t buy anything from there ever again
