  I have come to this Vons since the 90s, and through the last 15 years as an adult this has been my go to grocery store for all my basic needs. It pains me to have gotten to the point where I feel the need to place a bad review for my local Vons, but here we are. The last six months have been atrocious coming here, and this has gotten so much worse in the last month alone. I am not here to complain about pricing, but the store's efficiency with check out lanes. I am an ardent user of self check out, but when I need to use the check out lanes with a clerk, it is almost always a miserable experience. They only ever have one cashier open, and these cashiers have literally no hustle in them to get through the line. I can think of a handful that are nice and actually move with some speed, but when I am in the store it's usually one of three cashiers that are utterly unbearable to wait for. I have stood in lines for 10+ minutes because there is no sense of urgency. When I get to the cashier, they are too busy talking to the bagger to even apologize for the wait or give me any time of day, and I say that as an introvert that usually doesn't mind being left alone. Another issue lies in the recent updates to the store. Vons now has cart gates, which are fine. That said, since this update, half of their self check outs have been closed, leading to a long line regardless of which checkout area I decide to use. Last night not only where the two cashier manned lanes backed up with multiple people, but the self check out line had ten people as well. This morning I ran in to get something quick to eat before work, which takes me less than two minutes every time I do this. To my dismay, the entire self checkout area was closed, with one checkout lane open and yup, huge line and slow cashier with no movement. I walked out without buying anything, and since the cart gates are there, I couldn't even get out easily, having to fine an empty lane to exit through. I don't typically care about these sorts of things but it has gotten to a point where I just do not want to shop here anymore. I am leaving 2 stars because there again are a handful on pleasant employees that work here - but the majority are miserable, and the check out experience in intolerable now. The convenience of this location has left me and I'd rather go out of my way to find a different store for my needs.

  All their gift cards are compromised. The store won’t do anything about it. If you purchase any gift cards, open them in front of the cashier to ensure the numbers to redeem them are intact. Otherwise you are out of luck. It certainly looks like an internal problem that the company and the store aren’t willing to address.

  I went to this Vons this afternoon around 2pm and spent over $200 on chicken and meat. Before leaving, I politely asked the meat department if I could get a small bag of ice from the seafood area to help keep the meat cold during my drive to LA. I’ve shopped at this location many times before, and in the past they’ve provided small bags of ice without any issue to help keep the meat fresh. One of the younger employees was extremely friendly, professional, and helpful. He was very kind and even helped load my cart with chicken, which I really appreciated. Unfortunately, the older employee I spoke with came across as rude and unnecessarily aggressive when responding to my request. Instead of simply explaining the policy politely, he immediately said, “It’s $5 for a bag of ice,” in a very dismissive tone. I honestly thought he was joking at first, but he was completely serious. I completely understand if store policy has changed and complimentary ice is no longer allowed — that’s not the issue. The issue was the attitude and the way the situation was handled. There’s a respectful and professional way to communicate with customers, especially loyal customers who shop there regularly. Customer service really matters, especially these days when shoppers have so many options. Stores like Stater Bros consistently go above and beyond in their meat department by being friendly, accommodating, and making customers feel welcome. They’ve also provided complimentary ice with meat purchases in my experience. Again, shoutout to the younger employee who was great and very professional. I just wish the overall experience had matched that same level of customer service.
