Just moved here and twice in a row I got a rancid meat product from this store - first frozen meatballs that were bad when heated, then packaged pepperoni that was bad. For the area this store services, quality this poor is extremely disappointing. I wont be back. The fact that this store and the San Ramon Blvd store have expired product on the shelves, and the extremely poor customer service at the San Ramon Blvd store tell me that their 4+ star reviews are guaranteed to be either paid reviews or bots.

There are employees who complete a transaction, and there are rare people who transform what a company means in the life of a customer. Mary Borgognone, in the floral department at the Safeway on Bollinger Canyon Road, is one of those rare people.
I came into the store during one of the most difficult moments of my life, looking for flowers but not entirely able to explain what I needed. Mary understood that immediately. She did not respond with rehearsed sympathy or hurry me toward a purchase. She listened. She asked thoughtful questions. She treated the person I was honoring as an individual, not an occasion, and helped find an arrangement that somehow felt personal, dignified, and true.
What Mary provided went far beyond floral expertise. She gave attention without intrusion, compassion without performance, and guidance without ever making the moment about herself. That kind of judgment cannot be taught through a corporate script. It comes from character.
My professional background is in advertising, brand building, and understanding why people form lasting relationships with companies. A brand is not ultimately a logo, a campaign, a slogan, or a set of values displayed in a presentation. A brand becomes real at the exact moment an employee is trusted to represent it before another human being.
Mary Borgognone is what makes a brand.
Because of her, Safeway was not simply the store where I bought flowers. It became a place I will remember for genuine humanity during a moment when humanity mattered enormously. No advertisement could manufacture that kind of loyalty, and no marketing budget could purchase the impression she left.
Safeway leadership should understand what they have in Mary. She is not merely performing her role well; she is creating trust, loyalty, and meaning on behalf of the entire company. Employees like her should not pass through an organization unnoticed.
Mary deserves formal recognition for the extraordinary care, intelligence, and dignity she brings to her work. More than that, she should be seriously considered for a promotion, because the qualities she demonstrated are precisely the qualities Safeway should want multiplied throughout its organization.
