We visited on the 4th of July, 2026. The service and atmosphere was excellent. Our waiter and his entourage were attentive, personable and obliging. Unfortunately, the food was a disappointment. Unseasoned, bland and served cold. Unlike they're usual menu that we really enjoy. Spent more than $350 for two people and left feeling let down.

If you live in San Diego and haven’t been to Coasterra yet, you absolutely have to pay it a visit—ideally before sunset in the evening. It’s one of San Diego’s top scenic date-night restaurants. You get to take in San Diego’s night views from a unique vantage point, and the scenery is breathtaking. Boasting unbeatable ocean views, the restaurant faces straight toward the downtown skyline and the Coronado Bridge. Sunset hour offers incredible photo opportunities. It features a huge outdoor terrace with fire pits and refreshing ocean breezes, making it perfect for watching sunsets, snapping photos, or romantic dates. The weather wasn’t ideal the day I went, and I arrived a little late, so I missed the sunset glow, but I still had an amazing experience overall. The menu centers on modern Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood. Must-orders include table-side guacamole made fresh right at your table, ceviche and aguachile with ultra-fresh seafood, fish and shrimp tacos, as well as Mexican paella meant to share for two. Their fried cauliflower appetizer was also outstanding! The bill came out to around $55 per person, and it’s totally worth the price given the stunning surroundings. I highly recommend it for anniversaries or anyone chasing one of San Diego’s most gorgeous sunsets. It’s also a fantastic spot to bring friends and impress them!

What an unexpected slice of heaven to end our visit to San Diego! From the moment we arrived, everything about our experience exceeded our expectations—the atmosphere, the stunning views, the delicious food, and most importantly, the exceptional service. We had the pleasure of being served by Stephanie, and she truly made our visit memorable. When she mentioned that she had moved from the Bradenton, Florida area and learned that we were from the Tampa Bay area, we instantly connected. She took the time to share local highlights and recommendations, and her warmth, friendliness, and attentiveness made us feel genuinely welcomed. Stephanie provided some of the best service we’ve experienced in a very long time, and we sincerely hope she receives recognition for the outstanding job she does. As a family of three, we enjoyed every moment of our experience. The ambiance was beautiful, the food was absolutely delicious, and the service was truly top-notch. This was a highlight of our trip, and we would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience in San Diego.

6 of us came here last week for dinner. The view was great. Our waiter came to take our drink orders along with an app order. Drinks arrived and he took our dinner order after explaining the different food choices. Our food didn't come out very quickly but we were all talking so didn't really care. Later one of our friends looked at her watch and determined it had been over an hour and we still didn't have our food. Odd, we thought even tho they were very busy. We didn't even have a chance to complain/question because our server brought over the manager who was apologizing profusely. Somehow our order never transmitted to the kitchen even tho it had been taken. They had no idea how that happened but it did. The manager made it all good by providing some comps. The food was absolutely delicious. We would definitely come back again. Our server was on top of it and so was the manager.

We visited La Jolla for 9 days from Michigan to celebrate my 40th birthday. On our final night, we chose Coasterra based on its reputation for great views, atmosphere, and food. We made reservations in advance and noted that we were celebrating my birthday. When we arrived, there was a small birthday sign on our table, which was a thoughtful touch and made us feel welcomed initially. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience was disappointing. The chips appeared homemade and were decent, but the salsa was surprisingly bland—the mildest restaurant salsa I’ve ever had. The biggest issue was the service. We were at the restaurant for approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes and only ordered an appetizer and dinner. At one point, it took more than 25 minutes to receive a drink, and our waiter rarely checked on our table. We frequently had to flag down bussers and bar staff to get assistance or place orders for our children. Compounding the issue was a large private event taking place on the dock directly next to our table. For roughly 100 of the 130 minutes we were there, extremely loud music and amplified announcements made it difficult for our family to have a conversation. Had we known this event was taking place, we would have appreciated being seated elsewhere or at least being given a heads-up. When my husband asked our waiter for recommendations between two menu items, the response was surprisingly dismissive: “So you’re going as far away from Mexican food as possible?” After my husband again asked for recommendations, the waiter reluctantly replied, “I guess I can give you my speech…” before offering suggestions. The interaction left us feeling more like an inconvenience than valued guests. The food itself was good. Portions were reasonable, and we enjoyed our meals. However, for the price point and the overall experience, it did not justify the cost. One moment that particularly stood out was when I asked a staff member to take a family photo for us. I explained that we were visiting from the Midwest and celebrating my 40th birthday. She took a few photos but did not smile, speak, or acknowledge us in any way. While I certainly don’t expect professional photography, the interaction reinforced the feeling that we were unwelcome. My husband and I came prepared to enjoy a memorable birthday dinner, complete with cocktails and dessert. Instead, we chose to return to our hotel after dinner because the experience simply wasn’t enjoyable. I rarely complain about service, and I am usually the person encouraging my husband to tip more generously. In our 13 years of marriage, this was the first time I have ever suggested reducing a tip. We still left 15% because I understand that serving is someone’s livelihood, but I left genuinely disappointed. I am not interested in publicly criticizing any individual employee, as everyone can have a difficult day. However, I hope management takes this feedback seriously because Coasterra has a beautiful location and tremendous potential. Unfortunately, what should have been a special 40th birthday celebration ended up being one of the most disappointing dining experiences of our trip.
