Firstly, fyi, this isn’t an eat-in restaurant. All orders are packaged to-go.
That said, I visited Louisiana FFC at around 2:30 PM on a Friday. This was my first visit.
Upon walking in, I was greeted by one of several (5 or 6) young girls from behind the service counter. One of them took my order, a quart of seafood gumbo, and directed me to swipe my “card”. I complied. Total amount including tax; under eighteen dollars.
As I turned to step away from the counter, I noticed a man sitting in one of the half dozen or so chairs set up for patrons waiting on their food orders. All the other chairs were unoccupied. I took this to mean my order wouldn’t take long. This was confirmed when i noticed a single order slip hanging from the stainless steel food order rotary at the pass-through window.
After a few minutes, the man was called to retrieve his order at the counter.
After a few more minutes, I started to wonder what the trouble could be concerning the gumbo that I’d ordered. Gumbo is a type of soup. In restaurants, soups are already prepared and ready to be ladled hot into bowls, or containers.
FINALLY, one of the young girls approached the work station located in front of the pass-through window. With gloved hands, she then produced a large styrofoam cup into which she scooped some cooked rice. Once the cup was about half full, she filled it the rest of the way with a thick, chunky, brown, broth.
Thus, the seafood gumbo had been assembled. The process took about two minutes. Waiting for someone to actually take the initiative to embark on said process took about ten minutes.
At home, I now unknotted the loop handles of the plastic bag that held the gumbo, two packets that each contained two saltine crackers, two paper napkins, and one spoon. Evidently, ordering enough gumbo to feed a family of four doesn’t rate four of anything else to go with it. To boot, the spoon wasn’t even a large one.
The fact that the seafood gumbo is easily the best I’ve tasted in decades is the only thing that made the wait and so-so service bearable.
In the future, I’ll be sure to place my order by calling in advance. At that time, I’ll be sure to ask for saltines, napkins, etc., in an amount appropriate to the number of servings of an item ordered.
As to the rest of the menu, I’ve yet to try anything but the seafood gumbo which was absolutely delicious.
