  The thing is that I truly truly want to love this place. I work nearby and the owner is a great guy. Think of this review as tough love. In a neighborhood of gourmet and generally expensive culinary offerings, what temescal really needs is a humble, fairly priced, old fashioned hot dog operation that offers something sorely missing from this strip- a great snack or light meal that is accesible to the whole community. Winky Dinky could have been that, but instead it went the opposite route- outrageously overpriced food for mediocre quality. Don’t get me wrong, the food doesn’t taste bad by any means. But not bad isn’t good enough when you’re paying 15 dollars for a hot dog. My main complaint is that they do not use sausages with natural casings, so they are missing the snap you’d expect from a higher end item. Instead you get what tastes like a skinless Costco variety dog (which I’m guessing is exactly what it is) with a strong taste of artificial curing salts. Putting some grilled onions and special sauce on top doesn’t fix that, it just disguises the poor quality by appearing fancy. Seeing the other reviews, it doesn’t look like I’m alone in feeling this way. I would love to see Winky Dinky listen and pivot to a more humble (and likely more sustainable) business model. Winning the hearts of the people is more important than your initial bottom line, if you’re really trying to build a timeless community staple.

  We ordered the chili dog, fries, and a flavored sparkling water and it was over $30, and we were still hungry after, so we went somewhere else to order more food. It seems like Winky Dinky hasn’t done market research of other restaurants nearby which have better food for way cheaper: I can get 2 incredibly fresh and filling fried baja fish tacos a few doors down for $4.25 each, or a rotisserie chicken combo meal with half a chicken + salad + fries for the same as what we paid at Winky Dinky. Every time I pass Winky Dinky, they are empty, because their business model is wrong. I am not going to pay $15 for a mediocre chili dog which was worth maybe $7. I hope they figure things out before they go bankrupt. I’m rooting for you guys!

  I ordered an oxtail meal (take out) and was charged $32 for 3 bland fatty oxtails with bland gravy over white rice. No flavor at all! The menu has no prices. For obvious reasons. This place is expensive for no reason. Oxtail meal is a 0/10. I strongly recommend people not go here ever!
