Service was phenomenal, the steaks, sides were perfect and everything was clean and they had a woman singing at the piano. The only problem was that we ordered the butter cake to go. They brought two large bags for us and claimed that it was "deconstructed". When I got home and opened the box there was a butter cake the size of a Grapefruit in the box, enough for three people and it was cold. They were instructions to microwave it which I attempted, but it tasted horrible. I think if two people order two butter cakes and the white person knows that one butter cake would feed three people, they should let you know.

I was meeting a friend from across town in Los Angeles, and downtown was central to each of us, which is why I chose the restaurant. I have been to Mastro’s many times, but not this particular location. The food is consistently good. I want to preface this review by saying I had a wonderful time. I had made reservations in advance and was welcomed to the restaurant very warmly. As they were walking me to the table, they confirmed that I was celebrating my friend’s birthday. The waiter was great. The atmosphere fine. The table set up impeccably. No complaints there. Now to the problems. My friend ordered the Wagyu steak and I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass with appropriate sides, appetizers and a very good complimentary birthday cake. After the meal, I asked my friend how the steak was and he said that although it was delicious, he had ordered it medium-rare, it had been close to medium-well done. I asked why he hadn’t told the waiter, he said that it was still tasty and he didn’t want to make a fuss. He also suggested that it may have been originally cooked perfectly but sitting on the very hot plates probably had continued the cooking too much. The plates very VERY hot. The second failure had to do with my order of Chilean Sea Bass. I was actually served halibut masquerading as the sea bass. It didn’t register it at the time other than noticing that it was different from any other Chilean Sea Bass I had ever eaten. But it too was tasty so I didn’t make anything of it. I brought half of it home and as I was preparing to eat it for lunch, the lightbulb went off that it was not the fish I ordered and paid for. I find this all very curious!

We had a great experience overall. The atmosphere was wonderful, and although the service was a little behind at times, everything was going well until the end of the night. I ordered the crème brûlée for dessert, and when it arrived cold, I politely questioned it because where I’m from, crème brûlée is typically served warm. The server’s response was, “I’m not going to argue with you.” I was honestly taken aback by that response. I wasn’t arguing I was simply asking a question about my dessert. The comment felt very unnecessary and unprofessional, and it left us wondering why I was immediately perceived as being argumentative. I also couldn’t help but wonder whether race played a role in that assumption, which made the interaction even more uncomfortable. We spent over $300 that evening, so why would I argue over one dessert? It was never about the dessert itself; it was about how I was spoken to and made to feel as a customer. It’s unfortunate because we genuinely enjoyed the restaurant and the atmosphere. However, that final interaction really rubbed us the wrong way, and because of it, I’m not sure I would return. A little professionalism and simply explaining the restaurant’s way of serving the dessert would have made all the difference.

We went to this location on my birthday which was 2 days ago on August 6th. Our server was a man who was from Kenya (I forgot his name). He treated us with respect and was always there when we needed him. He asked me if my name was spelled as the goalkeeper from Argentina, Emiliano Martinez and I replied yes. That little comment changed my birthday because I am very passionate about Football. Overall it was very good service and kudos to him for making my day!
