I was really disappointed with how the staff handled an uncomfortable situation during my visit. Early in the morning, a homeless man came into the coffee shop and stood very close to me while I waited to order, repeatedly asking me to buy him a coffee. I was one of only a few customers there, and it quickly became a very uncomfortable experience.
As hotel security entered and asked him to leave, he became increasingly agitated and moved even closer to me. At that point, I genuinely felt that if I didn’t buy him a coffee, the situation could escalate, so I ordered one to keep the peace.
It was obvious that I was uncomfortable and scared, yet the cashier simply rang up the purchase without acknowledging what was happening or checking if I was okay afterwards. She went the extra mile to given him the smallest cup possible (validating the situation). Given the circumstances, and considering I had been coming in every morning that week while attending a conference next door. I was surprised by the lack of empathy. I understand these situations are difficult and often beyond the staff’s control, but even a small gesture, such as offering the coffee themselves, checking on me afterward, or simply apologizing for what had happened, would have gone a long way.
Instead, I left feeling shaken and unsupported. I received no acknowledgment or apology after the incident. I hope the staff are better prepared to respond with compassion in situations like this in the future. Unfortunately, this experience has led me to take a break from Bluestone.
