Update (See snap shots of Chipotle's responses):
After posting this review, Chipotle responded publicly and asked me to contact Customer Care so they could "look into this further." I did exactly that and opened a case.
The response I received was an apology and a statement that my feedback would be shared with restaurant leadership. However, no one addressed the specific concerns I raised regarding inconsistent portion sizes or the apparent lack of a standardized method for measuring protein portions.
I appreciate the response, but there is a difference between investigating a concern and simply forwarding feedback. Chipotle's public response states that customers should receive fair portions regardless of location or employee. If that is truly the standard, then it seems worth examining why so many customers continue to report inconsistent portion sizes.
My concern isn't about one bad taco. It's about a pattern that many customers have noticed over time. If customers are being told they should expect consistent portions, then there should be a system in place to ensure that happens. Otherwise, the customer experience becomes dependent on which employee happens to be serving the food that day.
POSTED June 12th:
I recently ordered the hard-shell Barbacoa tacos at Chipotle, which is one of my usual meals. I typically get black beans, white rice, barbacoa, red sauce, cheese, lettuce, and sour cream. Since I was sharing the tacos with someone who couldn't have rice, I asked for the rice to be placed in a separate container instead of on the tacos.
While watching my order being prepared, I noticed something I've been seeing more and more over the past few years. The amount of barbacoa placed on the tacos appeared extremely small. When the employee picked up the meat with the tongs, the portion looked noticeably less than what I would consider a full serving.
What concerns me is that the amount of barbacoa seems to vary significantly depending on the employee and location. One visit might result in generously filled tacos, while another leaves you wondering where the meat went. As menu prices continue to increase, customers reasonably expect consistency in the portions they're paying for.
If Chipotle is unaware that this is happening, it may be worth reviewing portion-control practices. The current method of using tongs appears to create too much variation from one employee to the next. A standardized measuring tool or scoop could help ensure customers receive the same amount of protein every time they order.
I enjoy Chipotle but consistency matters. At today's prices, portion sizes shouldn't feel like a guessing game. Customers shouldn't leave feeling hungry, wondering whether they received the full portion they paid for.
