On June 9, I placed a McDonald's breakfast order through the mobile app before the 10:30 a.m. breakfast cutoff. Shortly afterward, I received a notification stating that my order was ready for pickup. I arrived at the restaurant around 10:35 a.m., expecting to receive the meal I had already purchased.
Instead, an employee informed me that my order had been canceled because I arrived after the breakfast cutoff. I explained that the order had been placed before 10:30 a.m. and that the app still showed it as ready for pickup. However, the manager, Luis, refused to provide my order, stating his system showed it as canceled. My app never displayed a cancellation notice, and Luis said there was nothing he could do except direct me to McDonald's Customer Service.
I immediately contacted Customer Service and spoke with Eric, who said my complaint would be forwarded to management. The following day, Sal, the Director of Operations, called me and stated there was nothing he could do because the McDonald's app is operated by a third party. He admitted this is a known issue, although the app tells customers their orders are ready, the restaurant often does not prepare them until customers arrive at the drive-thru to avoid complaints about cold food. He acknowledged they have received numerous complaints about this problem but have not corrected it, even though the app gives customers the false impression that their orders are ready for pickup.
Sal also assured me that because the order had been canceled, the pending charge on my credit card would disappear. That turned out to be false, as I was later charged the full amount for an order I never received.
After the charge posted, I contacted McDonald's Customer Service three more times. Each representative promised to escalate my complaint, but I was repeatedly told the case had to be referred back to Sal, even though he had already said he could not resolve it. I was later told the matter would be escalated to Regional Management, but no one ever contacted me. On June 26, I called for the fourth time and was again promised a callback. More than two weeks later, I still had not received a response, refund, or resolution.
The facts are simple. I placed my order before the breakfast cutoff, received an official notification that it was ready, arrived expecting to pick it up, was refused service, and was still charged for the order. I contacted Customer Service four times, was repeatedly promised follow-up, and none of those promises were kept.
This experience reflects a complete failure by both the restaurant and McDonald's Customer Service. The restaurant admitted this is a known problem that has generated numerous complaints but continues using a process that misleads customers and results in valid orders being denied. Meanwhile, Customer Service repeatedly failed to resolve the issue or honor its commitments.
More than a month later, I was still charged for food I never received and had spent considerable time trying to resolve a problem that should have been corrected immediately. I expect not only a full refund but also appropriate compensation for the inconvenience, poor customer service, refusal to honor my valid order, and the unnecessary frustration, distress, and time I have spent pursuing a resolution.
