Paper bags are charged but have no handles, making them hard to carry. For heavier items they use extra bags and charge for each one separately. Not practical for customers.

Never going back to this place. I bought a slice of cake, and after taking a bite, I realized it had mold on it. It was disgusting and completely unacceptable. Very disappointed with the quality and food safety.

Place is clean. The mornings are awful for most of us in a rush (15-30min to pay). Cashiers talk so much, and are super slow. Express lanes open late (7am, that is IF there is no call off).

I submitted formal customer feedback directly to Safeway senior leadership, including Safeway CEO Susan Morris, regarding a disappointing experience at the Foster City Safeway location while attempting to purchase two Western Union money orders for routine household expenses. I have also escalated the matter to Western Union customer service for review.
The regular employee who normally handles money order transactions was unavailable at the time, and I later learned from another store employee that the interaction and final decision regarding my money order request were handled by the assistant store manager. I fully acknowledge that store management has the discretion to deny a money order transaction if they believe it is necessary. However, my concern was with how the situation was handled. The transaction was denied despite no meaningful verification process being conducted beforehand, and I received differing explanations during the interaction. I also explained that I regularly purchase Western Union money orders from this location for routine monthly expenses and even offered to provide prior transaction history for context, but management was not interested in reviewing it.
During the initial interaction, there was unnecessary focus placed on correcting the wording and grammar I used when requesting the money orders rather than addressing the actual transaction request itself. After that, I was questioned multiple times about why I needed two separate money orders for amounts under $500. I initially explained that the money orders were intended for rent. As additional questions continued regarding the exact amounts and purpose of the transactions, I further clarified that the money orders were intended for routine utilities and household expenses such as electric, water, gas, and garbage bills.
Despite answering the questions being asked, the transaction was ultimately denied, and I was informed that mentioning both rent and utilities caused the transactions to appear suspicious or potentially related to money laundering activity. As a regular customer, I found the interaction confusing, inconsistent, and unnecessarily accusatory.
What made the experience disappointing overall was the lack of clear communication, inconsistent explanations, and limited follow-up from store management afterward. As someone whose first language is not English, I also felt uncomfortable with the amount of attention placed on wording and communication style rather than the transaction itself.
I hope Safeway and Western Union both review the situation and continue improving consistency in customer service, communication, and policy application moving forward.
