  It's a good safeway not the biggest but usually has everything I need. Not the best meat department but a good deli and a lot of stuff is locked up that's always a bummer. Never to long of lines though.

  Today, a cashier at 1414 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley — a young, bearded man — asked my girlfriend about her religion and her relationship to me before completing her purchase of beer. I was standing just a few feet away, not hearing the conversation properly, and only later became aware of the situation. This behavior is absolutely intolerable and unacceptable, and I'm thinking of taking legal action against the store.

  Went on Monday afternoon and was deciding if I should post or not, but this experience has left me very traumatized, so I'm posting now. I met a very cold and dismissive cashier, pretended I didn't exist... I tried to pay $82 in 2 50 bills and she didn't give me my change... When I asked, she ignored me and told me i was blocking the line. I tried asking again and she ignored me. I left feeling very confused and now upset. I remember her tag name started with "S". Don't go there if you want to lose your money...

  Really bad customer service! I was in search of a particular type of Visine that was listed as in stock online at 1444 Shattuck Place Safeway. The person who unlocked the case wasn’t able to check stock as it wasn’t in the case. Went to a staff person up front who said what’s on the shelf is all that they have. I asked for her supervisor, who looked annoyed at my question, and the first customer service person stood off to the side and smirked. I then asked for the store manager, who was the first person to at least be courteous in responding. He said they have no computer to look up stock. Very odd that Safeway at this location is unable to confirm a stock item listed as on hand. But the customer service (Sunday, April 26, 2026) was shockingly bad. Needs a managerial review!!

  Every time i go to bakery department there is no one there to assist behind or near counter. I see flies near bakery goods all the time like deserts. I purchased loose plain bagels from the basket at bakery department yesterday because i did not see anything on them and had them this morning with my kids and we all ended up sick vomiting and ER said we had food poisoning and that since the bagels were all we had i asked could flies landing on bagels make us sick and ER said absolutely bc they carry bacteria and every time they land on exposed food they vomit. Why do you leave baked goods like loose bagels in basket exposed for flies to land; unsanitary. I tried calling Safeway on Shattuck Place numerous times to let the bakery manager know they should not leave loose baked goods in basket exposed but no one answered in bakery or customer service; frustrating.
