I am extremely disappointed and disturbed by how my complaint regarding the sexual abuse I suffered as a child at the hands of a Dingle resident that has now become a Bishop, has been handled by Church leadership.
I reported what happened to me to Church headquarters in Salt Lake City and to the Stake President of the Montpelier South Stake. I expected the Church to take the matter seriously, investigate it appropriately, and put the safety of its members and community first.
Instead, rather than seeing meaningful action regarding a person who sexually abused me as a child and who has continued to have a leadership role in the community, the Church had its attorney contact me to determine whether the Church could be held legally liable.
That response was deeply disturbing.
This should not be about protecting the institution from legal liability. It should be about acknowledging what happened, taking reports of child sexual abuse seriously, protecting members of the community, and holding people in positions of trust accountable for their actions.
I am speaking publicly because I believe people deserve to know how my complaint was handled. After finally coming forward about something that happened to me as a child, I expected compassion, accountability, and action. Instead, I felt that protecting the Church from potential liability was given greater importance than addressing what happened to me.
I hope Church leadership seriously reconsiders how it responds when someone comes forward about childhood sexual abuse.
