- JRJames (R)Sep 10, 20262.0Cincinnati State promotes itself as a good option for adult learners and parents, but some classroom practices don’t seem to reflect that. I’ve experienced grading expectations that were not clearly stated in the syllabus or assignment instructions, including losing points despite having the correct answer because additional work was expected but not clearly communicated. The other student I live with had an even more frustrating experience with Honorlock. A professor specifically called them out for taking an exam while sitting on their bed. What the professor didn’t consider was that other people in the home were doing their own school/work at the nearby desk. The student was simply trying to find a workable place to take the exam without disrupting everyone else. Adult students and parents don’t all have private offices or dedicated testing rooms. Some of us share desks, bedrooms, and living spaces with children and other students. There is a difference between enforcing academic integrity and making a student feel ashamed of the space they have available to take a test. We aren’t asking for easier classes or lower standards. We’re asking for clear requirements, reasonable flexibility, and respect for the realities adult students and parents face. If Cincinnati State wants to promote itself as supportive of adult learners, that support needs to extend beyond the advertising and into the classroom.
