Finding the right place for a child with autism can be incredibly difficult. You walk into places hoping they will understand, hoping they will be patient, and hoping your child will be treated with kindness and dignity no matter how challenging the moment may become.
So when we walked into this barber lounge, I honestly didn’t know what to expect.
We had heard they had a sensory room and staff trained to work with children with autism, but experiencing that compassion firsthand was something completely different.
From the moment we walked through the door, the entire staff made us feel like we were in the right place. ❤️
If I could give this place 100 stars, I would. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The haircut was not easy. It took two staff members, my sister, and me to help hold my 5-year-old nephew while he was kicking, screaming, trying to bite, and doing everything he could to communicate that he was overwhelmed.
And through every single moment, JR and Chris never judged him.
They remained patient, calm, compassionate, and kind. They never made us feel embarrassed. They never made us feel like a burden. They never made us feel like we needed to apologize for his behavior.
And the rest of the staff showed that same level of understanding and support.
Honestly, watching it all made me cry.
Because families like ours don’t want to be in these situations. We don’t want our children to be scared or overwhelmed. We don’t want to have to hold them down just to do something as simple as getting a haircut.
We just want someone to understand.
And they did.
They didn’t see a difficult child.
They saw my nephew.
They understood that he wasn’t being “bad.” He was overwhelmed. He was scared. He was trying to communicate in the only way he could at that moment.
And instead of judgment, he was met with compassion.
After searching for the right place somewhere that would truly understand his needs, we finally found it.
To the entire staff, thank you. ❤️ Thank you for welcoming us, for creating a safe and sensory-friendly environment, and for treating my nephew with the patience, respect, and dignity he deserves.
And to JR and Chris, thank you for going above and beyond in that moment. Thank you for staying patient when things became difficult. Thank you for never giving up on him and, most importantly, for never making him or us feel judged.
You may have been doing your jobs, but what you gave our family was so much more than a haircut.
You gave us understanding. You gave us patience. You gave us a safe space.
Today wasn’t just about getting a haircut.
It was about finally finding a place where my 5-year-old nephew could be exactly who he is and where our family could feel supported instead of judged.
To every single person who welcomed us, helped us, encouraged us, and made us feel like we belonged, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. ❤️
You may never fully know how much your kindness meant to us. What might have felt like simply doing your job was something much bigger to our family. You gave us comfort when we were overwhelmed, patience when we needed it most, and reminded us that there are people who truly see our children, understand them, and care for them through the difficult moments.
We walked in hoping to find the right place for my nephew.
We walked out feeling like we had found so much more, a place that understands, a place that cares, and people who truly have a heart for children like him.
Thank you, JR, Chris and the entire team. We are so incredibly grateful for each and every one of you. ❤️
