I am writing to share feedback regarding a recent in-store experience that I found very disappointing. While shopping in store, I approached a staff member to inquire about a product. As I was not fully satisfied with the clarity of the response, I politely sought assistance from another staff member. At that point, the first staff member intervened and responded in a rude and dismissive manner, stating that she had already informed me that the product was unavailable. I later came to understand that the staff member involved was the store manager, which made the interaction even more concerning. I understand that employees may have challenging moments during their workday; however, it is not appropriate for any frustration to be directed toward customers—especially in a leadership role. I’ve shopped at Sephora for years (level ROUGE), and this was—by far—the most appalling in-store experience I’ve ever had. Busy Saturday or not, what I encountered wasn’t just poor service—it was outright dismissive, unprofessional, and borderline insulting. I started at the NARS counter, asking for help with shade matching for both a full-coverage foundation and a tinted moisturizer. The rep barely glanced at me before smearing a random dab on my arm and declaring, “This is your shade.” No attempt to match it to my face, no consideration of undertones, lighting, or anything remotely resembling expertise. When I asked for a sample so I could actually test it properly, she handed it over—only to follow up my next request for the tinted moisturizer with, “Are you actually going to buy it, or is it going to be a sample too? Only three samples are allowed btw” Excuse me? Since when did Sephora turn into a place where customers are interrogated for wanting to try products before spending money? That comment alone was shockingly rude and completely out of line. Unfortunately, it only got worse at the Urban Decay counter. I explicitly asked for something one shade lighter than my usual tone. The rep slapped some product on my hand and told me to apply it myself. No guidance, no effort—nothing. At that point, I genuinely wondered what her role even was. Then came the inconsistency that really sealed the deal: when I asked for a sample, she flatly refused, saying they don’t give samples. Interesting—because I had just received one from another counter minutes earlier. So either the staff isn’t trained on basic store policy, or they’re just making it up as they go along depending on how much effort they feel like putting in. Then I asked for a better shade, so she grabbed another shade and immediately asked if I was going to buy it. The aggressive push to purchase, combined with zero actual assistance, made the entire interaction feel transactional and hostile rather than helpful. Sephora used to be a place where you could explore, experiment, and actually learn about products before committing. Now, at least based on this experience, it feels like a disorganized free-for-all staffed by people who either don’t care or don’t know what they’re doing. If this is the new standard, I’d much rather order multiple shades online and return what doesn’t work. At least that way I can test products properly—without being judged, rushed, or treated like an inconvenience. Sephora, do better. This wasn’t just disappointing—it was embarrassing for YOU!

Each time I go in to Sephora in Newport it is always pleasant and every associate is extremely helpful. This particular time I was looking for my favorite perfume and eye brow gel and Shamika and Kiya made the process very easy. Amazing experience
