I've been coming to Star Studio for several months now and cannot recommend the folks there enough.
I've had my hair at varying lengths over the years, but last year I decided I really wanted to try a fade. Star Studio had been on my radar a long time as a queer-friendly salon and I decided to check it out. Angel and I sat down for a consultation and discussing what style suited my personality and came up with a plan. She gave me the enby style I wanted without the tons of "Are you sure? Are you sure?" that I've gotten in other places when cutting my hair short. She just said "Right on" and made it happen in the punk rock but stylish way I've always dreamed of. It's amazing to look in the mirror and finally think "Yes, this is right. This feels like 'me'." I've been coming back ever since!
In all my years of having my hair cut, I've never established a relationship with any given stylist. I've always just popped in, got the hair cut, and never looked back. Now my visits truly feel like visiting friends. The salon has the energy of being a social scene in a way that I thought only existed in movies. Even though Angel is my stylist, I feel like I know the rest of the staff really well. My time there is filled with lots of laughter and ranting all around. As a queer and neurodivergent person, I've never felt so safe and seen in a salon.
Recently, I also started getting my nails done with Kitty! Again, in the past, I've never established a relationship with nail tech. Just in and out. Kitty and I talk through our entire, multi-hour long nail sessions. She even got coffee for us this morning when we BOTH were running behind to an early pedicure appointment. She has tons of cool colors, including temperature-changing ones that are extremely pleasing to the tizzy brain that craves stimulation.
If you've been looking for a salon with queer and punk rock energy, this is the place for you :)

I got my nails done with Kitty and they turned out incredible! I hardly ever get my nails done, so I wasn't exactly sure what would be best for me. She answered all of my questions and is very knowledgeable about what worked out best for what I was looking for.
I knew I wanted yellow nails (I had bought a nail polish that was the exact shade I wanted but didn't have it on me or have a picture). Kitty must've read my mind and worked her nail tech magic because the color match was PERFECT (see the pic below).
She was so friendly and fun to be around and I would 100% get my nails done with her again.
ALSO, the salon in general has such incredible vibes, is clean, and has great prices (especially for being downtown). I would recommend you get your nails and hair done here. They do incredible work!!! 💅💇🏼♀️

I went to Star Studio in Ypsilanti for what was supposed to be a simple haircut: about 3 inches off, layering, and face framing.
When I booked, I was told to select a “detox” so there would be enough time for the appointment. I did not understand that this would become part of the service I was charged for, and it was not clearly explained when I arrived. I ended up paying over $300, including products.
The haircut itself was not what I asked for. The layers felt uneven and the face framing looked choppy and unstructured. They did offer a correction appointment, which I appreciated.
The bigger issue was the environment during my visits.
During my first appointment, staff spoke about another client’s family member after they left and made assumptions about his political views. It felt inappropriate in a professional setting, but I tried to move past it.
At my correction appointment, the conversation started casually, then shifted into political and personal topics, including comments about the Israeli prime minister and his health. The tone of the conversation, including laughter and engagement from others in the salon, made me feel extremely uncomfortable sitting through it.
As a Jewish customer, I felt put in a very difficult position, especially being mid-service and unable to simply step away. I eventually said that I am Jewish and that I did not agree with what was being said. After that, the tone changed, but some of the follow-up comments came across to me as dismissive and added to my discomfort.
It is important to note that the owner was the one cutting my hair at the time and was present and participating in the conversation while this was happening.
I became overwhelmed and said I needed to leave before the service was finished. My hair was not completed, and I had to ask for clips to be removed so I could go. When I went to leave, I found the door was locked and had to wait to be let out, which added to the distress of the situation.
I did verbally express myself strongly toward the end, and I want to be clear about that. My reaction came after everything I had experienced while sitting in the chair, not before.
I also want to clarify that I did not initiate or create the situation. I was the one receiving the service while these conversations were happening around me, and I responded to it as it unfolded.
To their credit, they issued a refund within about an hour of me leaving, which I do appreciate. However, that does not change the overall experience.
I went in for a haircut and left feeling shaken and uncomfortable. I would recommend getting clear pricing in writing beforehand and maintaining a professional and respectful environment during appointments.

Hey everybody and The overseers of customer service at Star studio. So to start from the beginning I have been looking for a quality place cut and color my hair since I have moved to this area Ypsilanti My former place is in Novi Michigan or Royal oak Michigan and I really don't want to drive way over there every time I get my hair done. I've been trying to find a place for over 3 years in the meantime I went to the hair college in downtown Ann Arbor I was not happy with that but I kind of signed up for that so it wasn't the student's fault anyways I came to the conclusion I was either going to have to settle for something around here or drive to Royal oak, until I gave it one more try and googled top rated hair salons in Ypsilanti. And of course some results popped up I checked them out One of the results will start studio cool name I looked at the location Michigan avenue Ypsilanti I'm trying to think I haven't seen anything and you know the downtown stores are so cluttered in if you don't have something I catching then your plate anybody's place that's there really isn't seen cuz it's just you're driving and everything is so smooshed together you don't have a chance to even look at different names of the businesses. I googled you got the address and then I saw that they were closed on Sunday and Monday, today is Monday but when I looked on the thing it said they were open so I called them lady answered the phone I said wow you're open today is today Monday and she paused and she just said to me yesterday's Monday can I help you and I said well I'm so glad you're open I said I have not had service at your salon yet but I desperately need a regular place and I'm so impressed with the pictures and the website and I'm so happy that I found a place that looks like they can do exactly what I want. Then I said since you're open today is there anyway I could be seen could I walk in or and she interrupted me and she said we don't accept Watkins and I said okay well how about appointments and then she didn't even oh I said I don't have a credit card that's why I can't make an appointment online so then she said well we don't accept cash so you would have to make an appointment online with a card to come here and she didn't say it real nicer helpful or with any type of so that she could get me in the book with a stylus like I was so excited to do with no type of emotion in her voice no you know no excitement no just very monotone straightforward even when I told her I've never been to the salon and I'm new in the area and I desperately need a regular place. I said okay well I guess I'll go buy one from Kroger I said is that okay with do you accept those is there a certain brand I should buy I said a lot of people accept vanilla do you accept vanilla if I bought that would that be okay her answer was I don't know what vanilla is I'm not familiar with gift cards or store-bought credit cards I said well could I speak to a manager maybe she could help me she said there's nobody here but me then I asked her well when would be a good time to call back to somebody today and she says she doesn't know she's the only person there right now she said she thinks the manager might be coming in later then I said well there's a secondary phone number on the website should I call that and she didn't know about that phone number or where the phone number went or anything it was the worst by far welcoming I have ever received before I mean her refusal to help me somehow make an appointment at the salon I was so excited to go to shocked me I know everybody probably is not like that at the salon That's why I'm probably going to call back but man I really want to call a different salon and I got a big huge word of mouth I know I was absolutely going to love my cut and color from Star studio and tell everybody about it and how great they are and now I don't even know if that's going to happen because the service was so bad over the phone I don't know maybe if a manager sees this or something they could email me and let me know that they saw it .
