I went in fully intending to buy products and was greeted by an older woman with long orange hair. I’m used to the quick “welcome in,” so I politely said hello back. She decided to keep the conversation going by asking how my Sunday was. I answered kindly and then made the apparently unforgivable mistake of asking if there were any sales. Instead of simply saying “no,” she launched into a lecture about how they don’t do sales because everything is ethically sourced, workers deserve fair wages, and apparently asking about discounts somehow translates into wanting people underpaid. Truly a fascinating assumption to make toward someone standing in your doorway trying to shop. By the end of the speech, I felt uncomfortable, embarrassed, and honestly unwelcome, so we left. My husband convinced me to go back in and grab what I originally came for, and of course the same woman greeted us with an “Oh, you’re back.” Yeah… message received loud and clear. Thanks for the lesson.
