They know how to take a reservation - they just don't know how to keep a reservation!
I made a reservation 3 weeks a head of time. We had a wedding 5 hours away. We planned to be there an hour ahead of time. I checked the day before our reservation. Online and by phone. Online - no mention there would be an issue with a vehicle not being available. Phone - I called in and asked if I could arrive earlier. They just said "We have a lot of pre-scheduled appoints an hour earlier, please try to make it closer to your appointment pick up." No worries. Fair enough. I did. Day of - we arrive 30 minutes earlier, just in case. No worries if we had to wait.
We checked in. No car available. Not, "The vehicle isn't ready". "Not available"! They were waiting for it to be retuned. Okay? Well, 30 minutes came and went and it's our 11:30 appointment time. We go back inside and wait 5-minutes before we even see an associate. When they did show up, there was no acknowledgement of our presence. But more people were showing up for their vehicles. As Jack, an associate who was helping a customer in front of him, picked up the phone and placed a call. "Hey, Mr Soandso? Just curious how the rental is going? Great, very good! Are you on your way to the Lebanon, PA location to drop off your rental? Oh good to hear. About what time should you be here? Oh wonderful, thank you sir. See ya then. Bye-now."
At this point I was curious. We were visibly annoyed as it's closer to 12. (Now we're 30 minutes behind.) When Jack looked to us and stated, "Your vehicle is still on the way here." My friend asked, "Being transferred here or returning from a rental?" "Being dropped off from a rental, he should be here shortly," Jack said. "You'll have it turned around, inspected, cleaned and ready in like 5-minutes?" my friend asked. "Yeah" Jack responded.
My friend and I looked at each other and had a little side-bar conversation. What is "shortly?", What if the customer has things to unload or just rather slow at getting out of the vehicle? Will it actually be properly inspected, cleaned and ready within 5 minutes? What if the customer who was returning our rental decided to stop before he arrived for a lunch or something else?(Jack never mentioned to the customer that another renter was awaiting the vehicle and it's their appointment time - perhaps that is policy?) Plus the on-boarding, vehicle walk around, adding an additional driver (my friend), etc was gonna take an additional 10-15 minutes. (at that point - we were gonna be late for the wedding - plus what if there is construction or traffic on the way? It's one of the reasons we wanted to be leaving an hour ahead of time. We told them we could not wait and decided to use another option.
Now none of this is Jack's fault, really. He's not running the entire Enterprise operations. So I don't blame him. In fact he was professional and nice (but obviously under stress). However here is the issue: As a leader in the vehicle rental space, Enterprise should prepare and do better. Enterprise should always have contingencies. What about a spare vehicle, just in case? Or an upgrade or alternate vehicle choice? I'm not an expert on the vehicle rental business but Enterprise knew three weeks ahead of time I needed a vehicle. I trusted them to take and KEEP the reservation. They had an obligation to me. This Enterprise even had a sales lot! What about pulling a vehicle from the sales lot? I would have appreciated the offer. Maybe they need stiffer fees for late vehicle returns? In my opinion Enterprise dropped the ball. I had a reservation and they failed to keep their end of the bargain. They did not do keep their end. They failed a customer. They failed their purpose. I hope they figure out a solution for this in the future.
