  I contacted Smail Mazda because I was considering purchasing what was represented to me as a true seven-year/100,000-mile added-term Mazda Platinum Vehicle Service Agreement. During the sales conversation, I specifically discussed the difference between a plan that begins on the vehicle’s original in-service date and a genuinely additive plan that begins when the extended coverage is purchased. I was assured that the plan being offered would provide an additional seven years and 100,000 miles of coverage. Before completing the purchase, I reviewed the proposed contract language and discovered that the agreement would begin on the date the vehicle was first placed into service. Because my vehicle is already nearly three years old with approximately 24,000 miles, the plan would appear to provide coverage only until the vehicle reaches seven years from its original in-service date and 100,000 total miles—not seven additional years or 100,000 additional miles as I had been assured this was what I was purchasing by signing the contract. This distinction was extremely important to my decision, and I ultimately did not move forward with the purchase because the written terms did not match the verbal agreement. I recommend that anyone considering an extended warranty carefully review the effective date, expiration date, and mileage limits before signing or paying, rather than relying solely on verbal descriptions.
