Mr Tire story (started out as a “good” experience changing to a very bad experience)
On June 30, 2026, a very hot (probably mid to high 90’s) day, my wife and I (in our mid- to late-80’s) were concerned about some brake squealing on our 2018 Audi A5 when we stopped between noon and 12:30pm at the Mr Tire shop on Norland Ave in Chambersburg, PA. We were in the vicinity on our way home from a medical appointment nearby. The shop didn’t look busy and we thought they could just make a quick check of the brakes to be sure they’re safe. There were two gentleman in the shop outer office; one took our information and a short while later the other went into the shop area. Soon after that, the tech took our car into the bay area. About a half hour later the tech came into the office area and spoke with the two gentleman, then returned to the bay area. I asked the two gentlemen the status of our car. One said the “pads look like new”, and recommended some lubrication on some of the parts, but the brakes look safe. I asked the cost of the ”brake check”, and he said “no charge”! No invoice was provided. He asked if I wanted the lubrication of the brake parts done but we were tired and hot and wanted to get home ASAP, so said no. What a blessing – reassurance that the car is safe to drive in a reasonable amount of time and no cost!! We should give the shop a 5-star rating and comment how helpful they were!!
On the way home, right after leaving the shop, I noticed a warning message on the driving display - "Brake booster: limited functionality. You can continue driving. Please contact Service.” What a coincidence – we had just left the brake shop. Maybe the warning message would stop after re-starting the car – but it remained. I wasn’t overly concerned since it said we could continue driving. At home I looked up a test for “brake booster” on the internet that I could do and the car passed the test. I noticed no diminution of braking ability, not even after driving for awhile, but the warning message remained.
I brought my car to my mechanic of the past several years to see what’s going on with the “brake booster” warning. After 1.8 hrs of service time (costing $232.14), checking codes, and checking the vacuum sensor voltage supply and ground, plugging back in the vacuum sensor, he writes “Once we plugged back in (the vacuum sensor connector) the fault codes went away. It seems like the connector was not sitting correctly.”
So, it looks like the vacuum sensor connecter was not properly seated causing the “brake booster” warning to activate. And that came up right after leaving the Mr Tire brake shop. The Mr Tire tech was the last person examining our Audi brake system – presumably looking for a cause of the brake squealing. Maybe the tech accidentally bumped the connector while checking the brake pads and rotor and whatever else might cause squealing, causing it to dislodge? My mechanic says this connector is in the firewall and not easy to get to. In that event “accidentally” looks unlikely. Is it possible that the Mr Tire tech would purposely disconnect the vacuum sensor system, perhaps to generate more business? Unfortunately this appears more likely given that the connector is not easy to access.
Is the “brake booster” the only system affected by disconnecting the vacuum sensor? I had noticed that the auto stop-start system, where the engine turns of at a stop light, then on when moving again, was not functioning while the “brake booster” warning was on, but re-started when the vacuum sensor was re-connected. AI tells me that “Disconnecting the brake booster pressure/vacuum sensor on a 2018 Audi A5 compromises brake assist monitoring, electronic stability/ABS integration, and automatic start-stop functions.” Compromising the electronic stability/ABS integration” appears particularly dangerous to me. We hope that this situation was not intentional, but strongly believe an investigation into this tech and this Mr Tire location is warranted.
