- LRLen RugielJun 23, 20215.0My Check Engine light was on, so I stopped at this store to have the diagnostic run. A more experienced (not older) gentleman, whose name I did not get, did the test and it indicated a problem with the catalytic converter, so I prepared myself for a major expense. However, the gentleman suggested putting fuel line cleaner in the gas tank the next time I filled up, then unhooking the positive terminal of the battery, letting it sit for 1/2 hour (to reset the on-board computer), reconnecting the terminal and driving the car for about 60 miles to see if the Check Engine light stays off. That was about 2 months and 300 miles ago, so it worked: total cost was about $8.00, so a big "Thank You" for the good advice and possibly saving me a lot of money.

Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
