I am beyond disappointed with Penske and will never use them again.
My husband and I booked and prepaid for a 26-foot truck on April 3, 2026 for our July 2, 2026 move from Washington to Idaho. We did everything we were supposed to do. Reserved months in advance, paid over $1,200 upfront, and even arrived early at the pickup location.
When we got there, our truck wasn't there.
Instead, we were told it was about an hour away because it had developed a check engine light and was being diagnosed. No one could tell us when it would be available. We were on a strict moving timeline and couldn't simply wait around indefinitely. To make matters worse, Penske had no replacement trucks available. So after planning this move for months, we had no choice but to cancel our reservation because Penske couldn't provide the truck we had already reserved and paid for.
It gets even worse.
As of July 8, I still hadn't received my refund and was told to "allow a few more days." Then I noticed Penske had also charged me an additional $100 no-show fee. A no-show? We absolutely showed up. The truck didn't. I had to spend even more time calling customer service to get that charge reversed.
Since Penske left us stranded, we had to scramble to find another rental. U-Haul was the only company with anything available, but they only had a 20-foot truck, so we also had to rent an enclosed trailer. Instead of the little over $1,200 we had budgeted with Penske, we ended up paying nearly $2,000. Because the truck was smaller, we also had to rent a storage unit for everything that wouldn't fit.
Now, because of Penske's failure to honor our reservation, we have to make another trip from Idaho back to Washington, rent yet another truck, and move the rest of our belongings out of storage. Penske's inability to provide the truck we reserved has cost us thousands of dollars, countless hours of stress, and completely disrupted our move.
The most frustrating part is that this wasn't a last-minute reservation. We booked three months in advance specifically to avoid this exact situation. A company that rents moving trucks should have contingency plans when a vehicle breaks down. Instead, there was no backup, no real solution, and no accountability.
This experience was stressful, expensive, and completely avoidable. Penske didn't just inconvenience us, they created a financial and logistical nightmare during one of the biggest moves of our lives.
If you're planning an important move, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. We ended up with U-Haul because we had no other choice. While it cost us more than we originally planned, at least they had equipment available when we desperately needed it.
I would never trust Penske with another move.
