First, my driveshaft does work well. So functionally the end goal of a balanced driveshaft was achieved. However, achieving that goal at Musselman's required doing things I did not want to do such as being berated by someone and paying more than 100% over the estimate.
When I contacted this business I said explicitly that I wanted greaseable u-joints. I was told this wouldn't be a problem. When I asked what the cost would be I was told about $87.
I live an hour out of Idaho Falls and while I was in town doing other things I stopped by to see if the balance work was done.
Yes the work was done, however the cost for services and parts was $187. I hadn't been notified that the cost would be more than 100% over the estimate. In addition, they installed permanently greased joints in the shaft when I had specifically asked for greaseable joints. They had my cell number. They could've called.
To add insult to injury, while I was there I was berated by one of their friends at the counter, who they were making small talk with. They made no effort to quell this person at all.
I would've left the driveshaft there and let them eat the labor and joints, but for me to buy a new one would've been over $600 and a further delay in a project that I was under time constraints to finish. I wasn't going to cut my nose off to spite my face.
I decided to pay the bill, wear out the joints, put in greasable units, and go somewhere else the next time I need a driveshaft balanced.
I've serviced and repaired aircraft, cars, pickups, heavy equipment and only one other time have I come close to this bad of an experience. I do a lot of things I don't want to do to earn my money and I am not going to do more to spend it in a place like Musselman Equipment & Driveline Service.
