Where do I begin... I actually met Mrs. Leslie at moms group. I was slowly informed of her program and came to a sample class. I believe it was the beginning stages of her time with LPM, as you can see she was a tad nervous. (Perhaps I'm wrong ) Admittedly, I was nervous to commit to 3 years with a program I didn't know and a teacher I had no feedback on. At times, sometimes I thought, maybe this program isn't for my kid, but she could see that he was listening, receiving, taking it all it. She asked me to not force him. She was right.
She must have had a way with them, because my son loved her class. There were rewards, stickers, and FUN. Let's be honest, what music class is really Fun outside of the singy songy types. This class is completely different. I will get to that...
The homework part was admittedly a challenge, especially because he didn't know how to write to begin with. He was only 5. I can't say I wasn't slightly annoyed, but why? It was forcing me as a parent to work with my child more, to encourage him to develop. All of the negatives I kept running into, I could see the positive. Now the only real challenge was parent day (which I completely understand why the parent had to be there, huge benefit) , finding someone to look after my other two kids at no additional cost was difficult when you only budgeted for the course. She did however find a way for some parents to have their kids looked after (which she didn't have to do) for a fee. That really helped a lot of parents out.
The program itself, the important part, it's fantastic. Some might say it's a little dragged out. My son was 5 when he started this program. They start off with bells. Some parents want their kids to jump right into the piano, but the beauty of this, is he was learning rhythm and theory, tuning his musical ear and so much more. Everything on the slides, she shows you and what is on the LPM site, is what actually happens. Mrs. Leslie, makes the course fun for these kids whether live or on a zoom call, she really tries to keep these kids engaged. It's not an easy task let me tell you. We had a lot of bouncy boys who fed off each other, each taking their turn in class to have their rambunctious moments, but they were learning and we let Mrs. Leslie be the authority in class as she was the teacher. She asked this of us. Over the years she came up with a new way to keep them listening and it worked. It was so great to watch her grow as a teacher, as well as watch my son grow as a student. He is on the piano now finishing up the year, writing his own composition which I have not helped him on because I wanted to see that he had learned. Let me tell you, it's pretty cool. Now, I know some parents after 3 years, expect their kids to play like Mozart. My son can not, but can he read music, does he understand the theory, can he write a composition, can he sing DO from memory and be on pitch, yes. He has the knowledge to continue and understand what is being taught, he has a solid foundation and I can't wait to see how he progresses. You will find that other piano teachers will assume this is some kind of Musikgarten class or Songs for seeds, this is absolutely not that kind of course. There is a lot of hard work involved by the child, the teacher and the parents. These kids are learning proper music skills and if I could have Leslie back here teaching my other kids I would! If you're thinking about signing up, you should. Mrs. Leslie is great! She has a beautiful musical family and you can see that she puts her whole heart into this program! Music/family is her life! Thank you Mrs. Leslie for teaching our son!
