The Perlite Institute has collected available data on both perlite ore and expanded perlite products. To date, no evidence exists that perlite has ever contained asbestos, either from contamination or as a secondary component. In the mid-1980s, a vermiculite mine was discovered to have asbestos contamination and was subsequently closed in 1990. This mine, located in Libby, Montana, was exclusively a vermiculite operation and had no connection to perlite. Because perlite and vermiculite fall under the same classification, some people misinterpreted or transposed information during the investigation period, leading to confusion that perlite contains asbestos.

Perlite is classified as a nuisance dust only and acts as a mechanical irritant. For over 40 years, the perlite industry has led efforts to test for any health effects associated with the production, processing, and use of perlite. Notably, no study to date has identified an inherent health risk from exposure to perlite, whether in workplace activities or in areas surrounding mining locations.
