Dümmste Firma aller Zeiten: 1. Das iPhone ist defekt. 2.

TLDR: It’s true but staffing standards at Apple Store are dropping. Dylan (from London) saved the day and got me the Apple Watch Ultra 4 that I wanted after two of his less informed colleagues had told me they didn’t have it in store in the alpine strap size that I wanted. This would have never happened in the past. The full story: Let me add more detail: The first clown came to me while I was trying a display watch on and I told him I wanted to buy one in black with the burgundy strap but he told him he'd have to send someone and if I could give him the display watch I was trying on and then ran off to the back with it and disappeared. Before he did that I noticed the strap was seemingly the large size and I confirmed the different sizes on the Apple site while waiting. I was wearing my Ultra 1 with the right medium size. Then a few minutes later the next guy comes who handles my purchase and I tell him what I want but then proceeds to tell me the size is 49mm when I refer to the strap length. I had to grab a strap from the table and show him the size difference. He seemed confused and then somehow started to get what I was asking about. Then the first joker comes by and they talk and tell me that they only have large straps in the store. They were also confused when I asked for burgundy saying it was brown but then after looking it up on their supposedly useful dumbo devices they realised it was indeed burgundy and not brown. I'm trying to be civil here thinking how I know more about these watches having researched them so little apart from some launch articles I came across! Then the second guy tells me there is a cellular and non-cellular version which is wrong when it comes to the Ultra 4. He says the currently available ones are all cell but that Apple will be releasing non-cell ones later and that he didn't have price or info for those. I am pretty sure this is not the case even though I don't use the mostly useless cell feature. I then decide the large length strap won't work and thank him and leave the store but then as I walk out I think I'll get one of the two other colors if they have it in medium then buy a strap later. I go back in and have to wait for a new person after they took my name. Luckily this is when Dylan shows up as I'm playing with the in-store configurator on one of the iPads. I seem to notice that it shows me that medium burgundy is available (though its in German so I was not sure). Dylan is great and understands me perfectly and seems much more knowledgeable. He then says the configurator shows availability indeed and looks up my choice on his system and they have exactly what I want available right now! I'm shocked (and pleased) at this point but don't say much trying to hold back my disappointment at the first two uninformed bozos. The store was packed so I had to wait a while but glad I tried again. Apple is an amazing company but they cannot allow themselves to get complacent no matter what and this includes in store sales recruitment. I'm not sure if this is increasing ignorance of the next generation of recruits but I can only imagine how many less informed non-DIY customers get fed the wrong information!

The negative reviews for this store had me thinking I would also have a bad experience. I have now visited this shop on several occasions, and every time I accomplished what I needed to get done. On the release date for the 18 pro they were very well organized and had managed queues with extra staff and security. I interacted with at least 8 staff during my visits and they have all been professional, 6 of them even friendly. I also had my battery replaced for a 15 Pro with an appointment and it was ready within 1 hour, as promised. While they didn’t have the pop-sockets I wanted to try out in store, I was offered options for ordering them and a very thoughtful person wanted to make sure I did not walk away disappointed. I compare the level of service I got here with what I have experienced in DC (several locations), and Chicago (Michigan Ave). Maybe the staff smile a little more in the US and are a bit more personable, but that is also a cultural difference, which you should not hold against the Swiss team. The level of competence is the same as I’ve experienced in the US over the decades.

Before visiting, I tried to call this Apple Store because I wanted to clarify a question about online payment and the tax refund process. Apple’s online support told me they could not help and that I needed to contact the store directly. That was already a bit strange. I called the store twice on two different days, but nobody answered. Another issue is availability. Apple does not keep MacBook Pro configurations with upgraded RAM in stock, so I would have had to order one and wait several weeks. Instead, I found the configuration I needed at DQ Solutions, an official Apple reseller in Zürich, and bought my MacBook Pro there. Later that same day, before leaving Zürich, I visited the Apple Store because I also wanted to buy an Apple Watch Ultra. Around three weeks after its release, they did not have the basic titanium version in stock, which was another disappointment. Since I had a few hours before my train, I asked whether I could sit on the second floor for about an hour to unpack and set up my new MacBook. I have visited many Apple Stores around the world, and these areas are normally used by customers to sit, test their devices, attend sessions, or get help. I was told that I was not allowed to sit there unless I had bought something specifically from that Apple Store or had a Genius Bar appointment. I explained that the MacBook was brand new, bought that same day from an official Apple partner, and that I simply needed some time to set it up before my train. The answer was still no. That was probably the most frustrating part of the experience. I have always understood Apple to support its products regardless of which official retailer they were purchased from. Being effectively told that I could not even sit in the store for an hour to set up a CHF 3,000 MacBook because I had bought it from an official Apple reseller instead of that particular Apple Store felt extremely strange. I have been an Apple customer for many years, own many Apple devices, and spend a significant amount on Apple products. I did not expect special treatment—just a reasonable level of customer support. Friendly staff, but overall this was a very disappointing Apple Store and Apple customer experience.

Sorry Apple, Support geht anders! Support geht anders!
