I have been a loyal Best Buy customer since 2008 and, until this experience, I would have rated Geek Squad 10/10 without hesitation. Over the years, I purchased computers, electronics, service plans and repeatedly trusted Geek Squad with my devices because I genuinely believed they stood behind their work.
Unfortunately, my most recent experience completely changed that perception.
I brought my Asus laptop in for repair and data backup in December 2025. After the repair, I discovered that years of important information—including medical records, my professional travel industry database, government and income tax documents, family photographs and countless personal files—could not be located.
To Best Buy's credit, they spent several months investigating the matter. My file was reviewed by store management, Executive Resolution, the Privacy Office, Legal and technical teams. Throughout the process, the employees I dealt with, particularly Queenie from Executive Resolution, were professional, courteous and respectful. From my perspective, the process became increasingly focused on protecting the company rather than resolving the issue. By my second visit, it appeared that the matter had already been escalated to Best Buy's legal team, and from that point forward every communication felt carefully crafted to avoid responsibility rather than to genuinely understand what had happened or to make things right. Whether that was the intention or not, that is how the experience felt as a long-standing customer.
However, despite the lengthy investigation, Best Buy concluded that it could not determine that the missing data had been lost during the service process. I respectfully disagree with that conclusion based on my experience, but I appreciate that they conducted a review.
What disappointed me most was the final resolution. After approximately seven months of correspondence, the company's final offer was a $250 goodwill payment in exchange for signing a broad legal release covering all present and future claims related to the matter. No warranty extension was offered despite my request, and the proposed settlement did not reflect what I felt was a fair recognition of the impact this situation had on me.
For me, this was never just about money. It was about trust, accountability and how a long-standing customer is treated when something goes wrong.
I will continue to use Geek Squad because I am not sufficiently knowledgeable in IT to manage everything myself, but I do so with far less confidence than I once had. That is perhaps the greatest loss in all of this. The laptop can be repaired or replaced. Trust is much harder to rebuild once it has been lost.
